I’m looking for a “buy online cheese” shop in the US that ships small quantities to consumers. I'd like to try a variety of European cheeses not available locally (no gourmet shops in this town). Probably will start with sampler packages from say Italy and France. Any sources you can recommend? What country is your cheese favorite?

Spain, Italy, England, France, Mexico in that order!

I could eat a wheel of good Manchego with dulce de membrillo and jamon.

I would also be interested - my GF and I just started trying exotic cheeses and we are hooked.

I was a tepid cheese lover, that is until I went to le fromage in NYC. Damn, was that a treat

I learned wine and cheese, all night and found myself flirting with the 70 year old cheese preparer behind the counter in the back. I was high on both.

There's nothing like gewurztraminer and Strong blu cheese!

I too would interested in an online specialty house.

Two great NYC shops that have a good online presence, in order of preference:

    http://www.idealcheese.com/

    http://www.murrayscheese.com/

Ideal is far more selective than Murray's, IMO.

There are a handful of world renowned cheese shops in France that will mail to the US. I don't want to post links as they sell product that isn't legal in the land of the free (the whole unpasteurized milk thing.) A quick Google search will get you there, though.

Thanks guys! I think I'm going to try some sampler packages. Maybe join a cheese of the month club. Keep the sites coming!

Can't see any of the Cheese of the month club details. Anybody know what you get for the money?

Here's an eclectic shop in Williamsburg, Brooklyn:

In addition to great cheeses, they carry great and unique cookies, crackers, etc.

A NYC cheese epicenter and a wonderful neighborhood restaurant:

    http://www.artisanalbistro.com/

I haven't been there is some time but their reputation remains stellar. (This is the only spacious dinning room I know of in Manhattan that isn't occupied by a power restaurant; it was even roomier when it housed Forgione's An American Place.)

"In texture and flavor the cheese resembles a cross between Parmigiano-Reggiano and aged Gouda, with a firm golden interior and aromas of butterscotch and orange peel...The flavor is concentrated, with the cooked-milk sweetness of a caramel."

    Wow, I must try!
