I do appreciate that Jay made a decision and is sticking to it - now his "no Ferrari" vow is part of his personality branding.

Not having one is a cry for help, as he realizes ownership would not only help his ratings, suddenly things he says would be funny.

I would wonder about a person who got a pleasure out of underdressing to intentionally embarress sales people who have it hard enough dealing with those whom they believe might be serious customers. I do agree with the part of your post I have quoted above.

Well, at least for me, it's because I really enjoy the "Jay Leno's Garage" website. It has very nice articles, Jay's comments and opinions are always correctly based on solid facts, so I came to respect the guy and his points of views.

I would love to see more articles on Ferraris on that website, other than the Adam Carolla's one.

Besides his shop is excellent, and the projects that they carry on there are very nicely executed and documented... it would be awesome to see an F-car undergoing restoration at that place!!

It's not like he is a GOD, or anything like that. He might not even be a huge "authority" on many car-related issues as well... but he seems to be an honest car-enthusiast and gearhead, something I can relate to, and his laid back attitude and evident excitement when he talks about a car are amazingly entertaining... and you always seem to catch up some extra input that you never heard about a particular car.

So I guess that sums it up... he's an" authentic gearhead entertainer", and the fact of him not owning any F-car really sucks. At least for me, that is why.

Look at it this way. Jay is a true gearhead, 90+% of ferrari owners are poseurs, who wants to be associuated with that. I bet on the west coast every wanabee producer agent etc drives some type of red ferrari with sheilds to the office and parks it out front, why be associated with such poor automotive taste. What does it say about you that you drive a ferrari, to most not good.

Then add in the atrocious fake snobbery of ferrari dealers. Some people like to go to a club where you have to stand on line and be abused by the bouncers before going in, others like to dine at a fine resteraunt with friends.

Ferrari makes great cars, but they are not cool to own, and the buying experience is all about getting rich folks to bow and scrape, who wants that.

Ralph Lauren buy's classics, so he has not had to have dealed with dealer aholes.

Ferrari makes at least one great car the 458, but they are also all about brand management and that is telling in the buying experience and the range of other products they offer. Yes they are sucessful, but if youre a serious gearhead and driver there are other choices. where you dont have to put up with the negative sociatal imagary, poseurs and dealer Bs.

I'm bothered as he might be letting a small indifference / bad start get in the way of a lot of fun and enjoyment.

Life is too short to hold grudges... how long now Jay? Get the 599xx and be done with it

I've always felt like a red-headed stepchild in F stores and also gotten very nearly ripped off. The F40 was in service at an unnamed franchised F store and the clutch was long. They bled clutch, it went long again and they insisted it was a $10,000 throwout bearing change. It was a $10 clutch fluid change, that I ended up doing myself.

In their defense, they have folks lining up to buy (1) new maserati; (2) used ferrari; and finally (3) order a new ferrari. Why would they sell a new ferrari to me at sticker? In all candor I probably would not take the hit to the bottom line.

So I am stuck with the F40.

What do you call looking like pigs? - Someone dressed like a down and out in dirty, torn clothes or someone dressed in a clean T-shirt, jeans and trainers?

I highly doubt Jay Leno goes around dressed like the former, but I can easily believe he would dress like the latter.

Based on your posts, this somehow makes him a bad person not worthy of any respect!

Thank God for all the drug dealers, pimps and other unsavoury characters who at least dress up in expensive designer clothing so you can suck up to them, aye?

Having self respect doesn't mean having to dress up to impress a car salesman! At the end of the day, he's paid to sell cars to the public. If he fails to sell cars to the public because he doesn't like the way they're dressed then he's not a very good sales man! He's there to serve the public, no more -no less!

Honestly, you really don't come out of this looking too good!

(Oh!, and here's a lesson from the real World for you: you're sh*t stinks just like everyone else's!)

As for Jay Leno himself, I struggle to see all the fuss being made here about why he doesn't own a Ferrari.

It's quite feasible that he's put off by the fact that there are certain people in the World of Ferrari who have their heads so far up their own arses that they really are the most unpleasant people to be associated with.

It's just as feasible that Ferrari's simply do nothing for him.

I can honestly say, with hand on heart, that, never mind Jay Leno, if I were as rich as Bill Gates, within My incredibly extensive car collection, there would be not one Lamborghini, Porsche, Zonda, Bugatti and various others. Why? - because they do absolutely nothing for Me!

(My Ferrari collection would be bloody impressive mind you! :) )

I was willing to defer to his greater expertise on that topic and certainly did not want to inquire about how he knows. What is it about not wanting to know how sausage is made?

I see your point, but I'm not really under dressing on purpose, that's just how I normally dress. Of course I was stating that I didn't intentionally dress to impress either. I go in just being myself. Unfortunately, that is not enough to impress people in high end car dealerships. Once they talk to me, they will know within 1 minute that I'm not there to waste their time. I have to admit its fun to teach them lessons in human psychology though. My problem is that I always expect people to give me the same courtesy and respect that I give to them. If they don't, I have no time to waste on that person.

Here is an interview I recorded at Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance 2012. He does mention a Ferrari. Guess he use to be excited about them...

The original thread was about a guy asking Leno why he didn't have one. A valid question since he is a huge car nut and has Lamborghinis so he's obviously aware of European cars and not just American.
Then a large discussion came from that. Since someone recently revived the thread, there's been a huge amount of interest on that topic of dealers mistreating people. Seems like a lot of threads recently have been about how dealers treat walk ins.

Times are slow on fchat right now. The next F1 race isn't for a while, not many people been getting new cars (september sounds like it will bring lots of threads on that topic), Pebble just ended, and Ferrari hasn't releases anything about future models.
All we have are stories about someone not owning a Ferrari and rich playboys who 'run' over cops.

It's not necessarily interesting, but something to talk about and discuss. If you look at the recent responses, it seems like the discussion has gone to dealers arrogance and not people giving theories as to why he doesn't own one, which seems to be a fact anyway.

I have to add: his ownership doesn't sway my view of the brand and I don't care that everyone is talking about it.
