cool article ... thanks for sharing,

I got a tour of the factory in 1981 (long story) and that is pretty much how it looked when I was there.

Thank you for that - I hadn't seen that. That was fantastic. The opening scenes in the foundry look like some lost form of black magic - creating beautiful machinery with fire. What brilliant artisans.

Interestiing comment and I fully agree. Others as well as you and me had the exact same sentiment upon seeing this video. I call them the Ferrari brahmans, shaking magic Ferrari dust onto the moltent aluminum, without which the metal surely will not harden correctly.

glad you enjoy these as much as i do ...scanned from same R&T october 1987 Ferrari edition, not assembly line article in particular, but has the cutaway and technical data, plus enjoy the inset article by the late great Phil Hill, on his driving impressions of the 328 :)

I am wondering if the cutaway drawings of the car and the engine in the above article were produced specially for this article or exist as separate graphics? I would love to have both of thos printed poster size for my garage wall!

    Andy,

I would say these were produced as separate graphics, as you could find these in period french magazines as well, and in some books also.

    Best,

i can't say if this article was the first to display those artists cutaway renderings, but as nero said they appeared else where too, likely sold by the original artsist to various publications

The cut a way was produced seperately and available from Ferrari. I searched for long time before I found mine years ago on eBay from a seller in Italy. The framing was done locally. I believe this is the original sized lithograph about 16" by 24". It hangs in my home office.

Love these period articles. The factory has come a long way. Welding a body as it sits on the floor with no fixturing? Hmmmm. :D

If you read the reviews of the 328 you will see it was the 458 of it's time. Short of a Lamborghini Countach, a Testorassa or 288 GTO, or a Porsche 911 Turbo, this was the sports car to have.

BTW, the cutaway can also be found in the 328 sales brochure.

I love these old factory shots.

Automation in Fiat group assembly lines started in earnest with the Fiat Ritmo (Strada), 1979. It must have taken the best part of a decade for these practices to transfer to the Ferrari factory, who were obviously running much lower volumes.

Here's an iconic (British release) ad for the Strada from that period. I visited the very same production line circa 2000 and it was identical (producing the Panda on my visit).

Its fun to look at all the old factory photos and just wonder if one of them is your car.
