    Hi guys,

I did a search but can't seem to query the right thing for an answer so I have to post this. Sorry.

Dumb question: I have an F40 and only the passenger side fan is turning on when the car is sitting in traffic. That car does not overheat but the water temp gauge does go a fair amount past the center. Once I'm moving it's no problem. Still, when I checked it only the one fan is working and I would like both to be on. Any ideas on how to check where the problem is? Could it be as simple as a faulty fan switch (or switch for the wrong temp)?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

It is interesting that it shows only one fan under cooling system but two wired together in the electrical overview. Might just be a bad fan. Recommend hot wire the fan to see if it works. There is also indicated a large multipin connector (20). If the fan tests out okay you might try cleaning the connector and testing the line to the fan/fans. I have no clue if there are seperate lines to each fan at the connector but your wiring diagram might make this clear:

As a note if the fan works and the connector is okay then you will need to check the relays that control the fan/fans for cooling and airconditioning. They most likely are set up to come on either one or both when the A/C is on and the cooling signal from the thermostat switch is off. Typical are at least three relays envolved. Also fuses. A quick check of the OM does show a fuse for each fan, a relay for A/C and two relays for the fans.

Awesome, CD. Thanks. I'll start with that stuff. I really appreciate your input on this.

I never had fan issues with the 328 so it's a new thing to deal with.

FYI, it's not the fuse but each fan has it's own relay so that's a possibility, as is the switch. It's the left fan (driver's side) which I *think* is the low temp fan.

Looking over the manual it seems the F40 fans may be wired very similar to the 328 fans. Good luck and I love your trade up.

Thanks. It looked pretty similar to me but I never had to mess with it on the 328. I guess I'm due. It's always nice to learn new things.

DISCLAIMER: I'm not a mechanic and I don't play one on TV.

Any chance the fans are designed to come on one at a time? 2nd fan doesn't kick on until a certain higher temp is reached?

Yes, but at the times when I'm checking the water temp is into the 200's and the second fan should be on by then.

    I think.

Second fan on a 360 only comes on at 207 Degrees F so maybe you don't have a problem at all?

Problem solved. One relay had a wire disconnected. Redid the connector and both work perfectly. Thanks to all who chimed in.

Spent a while stuck in rush hour traffic on the way back. 90+ degrees outside and the water temp never even made it to the middle mark on the gauge. Awesome.

Thanks! Well put, CD! The to do list is definitely getting shorter. I have a few things left but nothing looks to be too complicated or ginormous. Saying my prayers and hoping for the best.

With some luck, it should be totally sorted before too long. It certainly drives amazingly. It's just a matter of going through it all and taking it from a garage ornament to a perfectly sorted, fire breathing monster.
