The big question remains: what about the sound?

I hope it doesn't sound like IndyCar. Those are awful.

Agreed. We need to get F1 down to electric powered 2-cyl engines...that will be awesome. Well, at least they were smart enough to waive off the four-cyl engines, and go with a V-6 Turbo starting in 2014.

Also not mentioned by the OP (and I am sure not inteded to be) is that while Ferrari, Renault and Mercedes continue efforts on the new turbocharged engines, the fate of independent supplier PURE remains uncertain after the company suspended operations earlier this month because of funding difficulties.

It is also unclear yet as to whether or not Cosworth will elect to invest in expensive development of a 2014 engine, either, which could leave F1 with just three manufacturers for the start of that season. (Sounds like a series I know)

Man I remember the days when F1 had real engines. V-12's and V-10s. Now we are heading for V-6 Turbos??? (Sounds like _______________ series)...

We will find out soon about all this. No matter the engine is alive and its what we will see race. Im excited by the change. We had 4cyl turbo's in the past and the world still turned. No need to panic.

DF1, Tifosi and I are always going at it...:D

Not panicking, but truly do miss rules that allowed manufacturers to bring the engines that they wanted to...the sound of the V-12 and V-10 engines on track was amazing. It was noticably less thrilling when they went to V-8's and now my concern is as we head toward the 4 cyl engines, they just won't do it for me like the 12's did regardless of what amazing performanc they can squeeze out of them (and we know that they will).

Part of what was cool to me about Ferrari's and Lambo's as a kid growing up was that there weren't many cars on the road that had a 10 or 12 cyl engine. I just can't get amped about a race or road going Ferrari with an in-line 4 cyl...

Even a V-6 is a reach. I love the in-line turbo charged 6 in my DD, but a Ferrari it isn't.

We all probably know we will not get the same sound as we had back in the original turbo era.

4 main bearing journals on these things, 90 degrees, and 3 rod journals are allowed. This closely resembles the old Maserati Merak engine for anyone who wants to check out clips of that thing, it's a very odd sounding V6.

Renault, MB have been in the conceptual phase for their engines for some time and I don't think they are about to say whether or not they have anything running or not. Rumors are that MB had something assembled at the beginning of summer, but who knows if they ran it or not.

They're going to sound like crap next to the V8's which sound like crap next to the V10's.

...which sound like crap next to the V12's.

And after two races nobody notices anymore.

As long as they don't run on Diesel or electric, I don't care.

While "common sense" suggests 4 main bearings there's nothing in the regulations that mandates it be so. They do specify 3 rod journals (art. 5.1.10) but not the # of mains.......

    Cheers,
    Ian

    Picture tells a 1000 words.....

The annotations highlight the mains - The crank rotates on these four.

"Between" these 4 are the rod journals - Two conrods connect to each - One from each side of the vee.

    Got it? ;)

    Cheers,
    Ian

As awesome as the V10 and V12 sound, I don't really recall anyone complaining about the way the turbo cars sounded in the 80s.

I hope so. I still cannot get over the front no rear wings being so out of proportion.

I'm still on the fence on that one. I suppose I have to see them in real life to form an opinion...

I think these will be different sounding, but who knows. Glad to see Ferrari seems "ahead of the game" with this engine. I'm not real excited about turbos, but I am EXTREMELY excited about unfrozen engines with actual development.

Exactly. New formula not frozen and new motors. I think this is good.
