Im gonna do a big service on my 348 in a while, changing belt, waterhoses, tensoiner bearings and so on. In all the threads Ive read so far everybody is talking about taking the motor out of the car... Why is that? Im pretty sure it can be done with the motor still in the car. Any ideas???? Thanks Adam
It's a great opportunity to actually LOOK at everything and inspect from one end to the other. Also a great time to inspect the engine bay and clean and detail all the bits that cannot be reached with the engine in place. Jedi
Read the many threads on the subject. Dropping the engine/gearbox unit is the only practical way of doing it "right". Here are a couple views of the engine, in place with the fuel tank removed. It is necessary to remove the crankshaft pulley to access the timing belts. Can you see the problem? Don't cut corners (or the chassis). Drop the engine, it's not really that hard with the right equipment. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Great pics. I'll add that the engine and drivetrain are designed to be removed easily with the sub-frame assembly. It doesn't take much more effort to remove the engine than fudging aorund with the gas tank "method" and the result is proper access to do the job correctly.
I would rather drop the motor than the gas tank anyway. Especially on a 348. I have dropped 2 tanks on 355s and it wasnt any fun, but I hate dealing with fuel.
you can borrow my crankshaft pulley removal tool if you still want to leave the engine in Image Unavailable, Please Login
I had an engine in Cambelt change done last year. This winter I'm taking the engine out. That's what i think of engine in cambelt changes!!!! It's a load of bollocks!!!
So you can hang out with this in the garage Almost a shame to put it back in Image Unavailable, Please Login
OK, so it needs to have the engine out to do the service. Well, it was DESIGNED to have the engine come out. I love that you can get at it all. The worst has to be the 512TR, which needs engine out but is a bee-atch to do.
Is there a diffrent to change drivebelt on a spider? The autorized Feraridealer/workshop here in Sweden change the belt whitout taking down the engine, they doing it by remove the fueltank,(i was looking at a spider and read the documenation on the drivebelt change). Patrik
Heck with all this! Just cut the belt and thread a new one in, join ends with staples like they do on conveyor belts..............sheez people
That they are. Nope, same procedure to change the cam belt on the 348 coupe and 348 Spider Patrik. Either engine out or fuel tank out. That's what I did last time. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Holy crap, Batman!! Looks like Jaws took a bite out of it. Not much metal left there. Sure hope it was over engineered. Don't hit any potholes, for sure....
Why on earth would anyone want to remove the fuel tank to do this? Why not just follow the procedure that this was designed to do = engine comes out
Yuppers. I'm glad to see they were put to good use, and that is the reason it took them. So that it's plain as day why you need to remove the engine.
cutting the tube frame to allow for engine out the top, and welding in brakets to bolt the bracing back together. My old race car had this and the engine/trans came out in 20 minutes. Thoughts?
