Not exactly: the 20 millions are more or less what Ferrari calculate as their loss in revenue for not having a better classification in the constructor's championship...

Done my best to translate it, but from italian to english without stopping to pause in french, I might have made a few mistakes...

    Best,

An extract from an article by Autosprint in its new issue explains what the negative output of Felipe this year would cost to the Cavallino in the Constructors' Championship. The delicate question of the renewal of his contract has been postponed to December.
In today's issue right for sale Autosprint provides an update on the "case" Massa. It reveals what appear to be Ferrari strategies for 2013. Here enclosed is an excerpt from this Autosprint article.

Maranello is the main subject of the tam-tam about the driver's market. In the front line, of course, the Massa case. Day by day, the mystery thickens. Because it is true that, so far, it was said (rightly) that the pilot had no choice but to convince Maranello to keep him another year. But now the question arises about the alternatives Ferrari might have. The August break, in this sense, does not seem to have cleared the perspectives at all. In fact, with every week it seems increasingly probable that the team will not make any announcement for the rest of the season. In other words, you will have to wait until November without a team mate for Alonso being nominated for 2013.

Sebastian Vettel is still far away, Mark Webber confirmed at Red Bull for next year (and for 2014 Ferrari will not be interested), Jenson Button has made clear his "red lines" that confirm he will stay under his contract with McLaren. And although the confirmation is not effective yet, at this point it seems almost certain that Lewis Hamilton will remain with the team, even if his position has weakened somewhat.

But for Ferrari right now, the problem is not quickly find a replacement for Felipe. The problem is rising from a situation that is touching the limits of paradox. Alonso is leading the Drivers' championship with an advantege of 40 points over the runner-up, but his team is fonly ourth in the Constructors' Championship. The gap between Alonso and Massa points - 139 points after eleven races - has reached proportions that dwarfs the spread between BTP and The Bund. But with the new criteria of division for revenues, between a first and fourth place in the championship it amounts to something like twenty million lost. (...)

    Interesting.

So Massa has become the 20 million $ mistake. And that's just this year.

One would think that Ferrari would make way more than that if they manage to win the WDC though?

Depends on whether Alonso wins the WDC or not. If he doesn't loosing also the WCC will really hurt, which will be down to Massa.
If Alonso wins the WDC the WCC becomes meaningless.

So the marketing loss could be way greater than 20 million. All because of Massa. Although that statement isn't totally fair: Massa screwed up the driving but management should have intervened a long time ago. Like in 2010.

I think it would. Both drivers have come a long way since then and it would be epic. LH is going to re-up with McLaren though.

Just the fact that they are both ruthless in wanting to win, I cannot for the life of me see either one of them wanting to play a supporting role to the other, but as you say time may change outlooks, but I highly doubt it.

Yes LH will stick with Mclaren I have no doubt.

Agree-no brainer for him really, as long as MB continues to be the engine supplier.

Wouldn't necessarily have to be supporting unless it was the last race and one of the two was going for the title or something. Just have 'em both go at it. Ferrari would be dominant. I think Fernando and LH would work better than Fernando and Vettel.

"I've had a similar situation many times. Together with these, this is an important moment of my career."

So he's admitting that he regularly underperforms? LOL

Exactly: "I have a lot more to offer": hopefully, my boy!
How could he hope to be retained and still offering only the same level of results in the future?
"I must offer a lot more, and quickly, to be retained" would have been more to the point.
