    Sorry if this is repetitive. Searched some threads and found a few on importing. Looking for some recent experiences in the last year or two importing from the US and any links to help determine paperwork and costs associated with it. Ideally would like to go pickup the car and drive across the border with all paperwork submitted in advance and pay any fees at the border.

    This would be for 308 so not sure if the 6.1% duties still apply etc to a 30+ yr old car.

    Appreciate the feedback.

    The 6.1% duty is applicable regardless of age. If it was constructed offshore, sold anywhere in North America, then the duty applies.

    There's absolutely no way around this. Except one. And you have absolutely no control.
    Depending on the market trend, if our Canadian dollar increases over the U.S dollar while your vehicle is being transported, you will only pay the duty of the current value of the car. Still there? Let me explain.

    If, for example, you paid $30,000 US for your 308 on a Monday. And our Canadian dollar increased in relation to the US, then on Friday your car is theoretically less. If you calculate the current exchange rate and then multiply the duty to the Friday US value, you could save quite a bit of money.

    During the paperwork process, you must submit the agreed purchase price in advance of arrival to the port of your choice. Only then will the duty be applied. Since you don't pay the 6.1% duty at the point of sale (car lot), you could save a lot during transport.

    This was exactly what had happened to me. After all was said and done, I actually saved over $1,000.00 on acquiring my car from the States because during the 5 days it took for the transport company to bring the vehicle to the border, our Canadian dollar rose from $1.02 to $1.04.7

    A lot of you may disagree, but this is what happened. Do the math, watch the currency trend, and buy wisely. Buying and shipping from the States is not as difficult as it seems. Good luck

    Good advice, thank-you. I was hoping for a different answer on the 6.1% but at $30-40K purchase price still seems like potential for savings buying down south based on some of the prices I have seen in CA for two cars with similar mileage and condition. Although factoring in a trip to see the car in person might net out any savings.

    In 09 brought my '71 Espada in from San Diego and did NOT pay duty . Paid pst and gst when plate when on .
    No duty on cars over 30 years in 2009 not sure when that changed ?? Can someone google government site?

    I brought my 308 over 6 years ago and did not pay any duty.

    Good day,

    This is not correct... at least according to the legislation... or perhaps it has been changed? See attached Document from CBSA. It is possible that the CBSA is unaware of this Memo?

    I imported my De Tomaso Pantera ... paid duty ... and then applied to get my duty back, which I did (100%).

    FYI for the future, this also applies to parts for your 308.
