Not only was the Daytona a sixties car, it was the ultimate and final development of the lineage of Ferrari cars from that era evolving from the 275GTB/4 and 275GTB which themselves had much of the DNA from the 250 GTO, 250 SWB Berlinetta and 250 GT LWB TdF. Ferrari had been shaken by the introduction of the avant garde mid engined Miura and needed to raise their game to compete. Rather than follow suit with a mid engine design they chose to stay with the traditional front engine and put all they'd learned from their previous cars into the Daytona. The end result was the fastest, most refined and greatest all round sports car in the world.

Look at the beautiful big analogue black dials with white needles/hands and graduations with raised details on those stunning clocks. They remind me of the dial on one of the most famous and most beautiful watches ever made, and from the same time, the Omega Speedmaster Professional ref 145012. The NASA Moonwatch.

Great shot, I guess by the oil temperature gauge you had already had a pretty long spirited drive?

I've never been a massive lover of the Daytona. Whilst yes it was designed in the 60's it is seen as a 70's Ferrari. Yes the engine configuration is traditional but the styling is in my opinion a touch awkward. I looks great on 3 eared Borrani's but that shape is just not as tasty as the 275GTB.

The true Ferrari stunners are of the 50's and 60's. Period. They have curves. They are achingly beautiful. The Dino is indeed off the scale beauty wise. The market votes with its wallet. That is why a Dino 246 and Dino 308 show this glaring disparity.

The E type and XJS are in exactly the same boat. The XJS is I suppose dynamically more advanced. Who cares? The S1 E-type is sex on wheels. I don't see too many £120'000 XJS's.

The Stiletto heel was all the rage in the late 50's. Then late 60's the square flat heel came along.

I know what I prefer on a women... Evolution does not always mean superior on all levels.

    Excellent!
I was surprised to hear one owner say that he prefers to drive his Daytona over his BB512 Boxer, makes all the right sounds, pulls wonderfully on acceleration and has great driver feel.

Has anyone else heard this too?

The Daytona is just fantastic. Please excuse me while I listen again. Oh, what music? To not appreciate the sound of this car must be like being automotively assexual, or deaf. I know this is a Daytona Competizione but for years the press described the standard Daytona as being one of the very best sounding cars ever made. Its independently tested performance figures and handling properly conveyed its prowess, as the fastest and best all round Grand Turismo car in the world! It's so very beautiful it hurts my eyes. Please excuse me while I listen again. The Daytona is NOT, not loved, by me. I LOVE IT!!! Please excuse me while I listen and LOOK again.

I've made it very clear in this thread that I love the Daytona and I am besotted with the Boxer. However, In the late seventies, numerous former Daytona owners, not used to mid engined cars, sold their Boxers to reacquire a Daytona, pushing prices up. The last half of what the owner said about the Daytona sounds about right.

I really like BB's too, but they have a lot of chassis flex and a high CoG at the rear, the result is a car that can be unnerving at high speed. They also bottom at the rear without much provocation. If you look under a hard driven BB, you'll often see the exhaust headers flattened from contact with the road. The Daytona on the other hand is very secure in 80-90mph sweepers and very well planted up to about 130mph - when the nose starts to go light. If you get into an understeer situation in a Daytona, you can use the throttle to get out of it - much harder to do in a BB (or any mid engined car for that matter). I find my Daytona is quite a playful oversteerer, not that I indulge much as it will rip up the inside of a pair of XWX's in 2000 miles!

I had a rather lurid oversteer moment in France in the rain last month. I was surprised how easily the slide was to catch in the Daytona, although didn't stop my heart from jumping into my mouth!

i lent my daytona to ferrari for their museum in shanghai and have not really seen or driven my car much in the past 2 years. not sure if absence makes the heart grow fonder or i remember the car with technicolour shades. have owned the car for almost 10 years. even tracked it at the opening of the shanghai f1 track. daytona is simply a fantastic car.

in the meantime have purchased a 2.7rs that i much enjoy driving. will be interesting to see how the daytona fares on its return now that i have another weapon of the era (more or less)

Just curious, why would you loan your car to a meuseum? What do you get in return? It would be difficult to not drive any of my cars for 2 plus years!

The global population in 1970 was about 3.5 billion people, today it's over 7 billion. The amount of available Daytona's per capita has been reduced by 50% :)
