Emilio, The wings were installed at Sant Agata inside the factory. I was there in 1988 and saw them putting them on. See pic as further proof. However, by the late 80s, the factory was actively discouraging use of the wings. The sales department looked upon them as an unofficial option. The received wisdom was that they were nothing but ornamental, and in fact slowed the car down. Having said that, at terminal velocity, a wingless car has a tendency to 'wander'. Ask me how I know To add to Ed's comment, many cars now have wings that did not have them in the first place. In my own case, excepting a unique item like that on 1121038, I generally remove the wings. Even more unofficial was the installation of Ansa F1 Sport exhaust systems. Initially these were done outside the factory in the early 80s. But by the late 80s I saw cars coming off the line with them already installed. I guess the guys from Ansa simply drove over to the works and installed them whilst the line foreman looked the other way Ansa F1 sport exhausts were never installed on any USA car when new. In speaking with George..he placed them on his car..he liked the looks...if you recall I placed them on the Black S2 I had for a while...but was quickly advised that it was not correct to attept to make a S2 car look like a Ealry S1 car.. I as well liked the look...and in the future will more then likely palce them back on a S1,2 or 3 car I take in...as far as I am concerned they were Orginal Equipment, so no harm no foul if the are on and of the cars...taste in the owners eye's as far as I can see..
I was told by a few differnt folks from back in the day..that the wings were of course produced by an outside vendor, not the factory..and as Joe has pointed out..were discouraged from being placed on cars... I was also told, not sure if it is 100% or not..but that 89 Anniv cars sent to the USA were shipped with the wing in a box and not installed on the car at the factory...the wing was then placed on the car by the recieving Dealer...??

"This poster was created in 1988 here is Estes Park by Dr. Bert Bergland. The 1988 Lamborghini Countach belonged to Dr. Bergland. The state trooper is Steve Smee, who was stationed in Estes Park for many years, Both men are now retired, Smee having achieved the rank of Major, was retained by the state patrol an additional year in order to coordinate the security for the Democrat National Convention in 2008. Dr. Bergland, who practiced emergency medicine and family practice in Estes Park from 1979 until 1990, retired from practice in Colorado Springs in 2006. Dr. Bergland and his wife, Marti, have recently returned to live in Estes Park. The concept for the poster, which is the original using exotic automobiles in this sort of law-enforcement genre, was born one day while Dr. Bergland (then Deputy Medical Examiner) was riding on patrol with trooper Smee. Steve took the idea to the chief of the state patrol, who quickly and enthusiastically endorsed the poster project. The photo shoot occurred in the late Spring of 1988 in a Denver studio. The light bar was donated by Federal Signal, Smee served as the model. His frequently practiced, intimidating pose was familiar to many tourists and Estes Park residents through the 1980s! Chief Dempsey and 1 Deputy Chief Lonnie Westphal brought the insignia and license plate number 10-002 to the professional photo shoot. These posters are now considered somewhat rare. This poster turned out to be one of the top five selling posters in the United States in 1988. Part of the proceeds then were given to the CSP police protective association to help fund their windows and orphans fund." I wonder of the good doctor still has the car. Wings were produced outside the factory. Lamborghini could not sell or ship a new car with the wing installed as it was not allowed for street use. ciao
That is funny. I don't understand, just because the car can reach the average takeoff speed of an airplane doesn't mean they need not install them. I mean what did they think was going to happen flying cars, Ha Ha Ha such fairy tales. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMWg5SLenu8[/ame]
Cool story. Although I couldn't resist modifying the poster just slightly.... LOL! ;-) Mike Image Unavailable, Please Login
Strictly speaking.. But all things are possible in Italy As you saw in the image I posted of a group of 88.5 Countachs inside the factory with wings fitted prior to delivery, the rules were, shall we say, flexible. Here is a brand new USA spec QV awaiting shipment to Joe Nastasi with wing affixed, imaged in the factory courtyard. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Vic, Automobili Lamborghini SpA featured a brand new USA spec Annivesario complete with fitted wing in the official brochure. Best, Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Is that not the Beautiful S1 owned by Dennis F in South Cali..heck of a nice guy..a pleasure to deal with and one heck of a Photographer as well.
I would refer to this publication as 'flyer' as opposed to this being the 'brochure'... and since I am nitpicking now anyway... shouldn't it be anniveRsario ? One of our italian native speakers sure can help with this 'issue' Image Unavailable, Please Login
I agree with it being described as a flyer. The point was only to further illustrate the mounting of wings on new cars, nothing more.
Spoke to William Loughran, who was really helpful, but said the silver LP400 was a private import (not by him) and so wouldn't appear on the official UK RHD list. He owned the car for about a year and then the trail goes cold. At least we know it's not one of the official UK RHD ones. I was a bit starstruck talking to him!
Hi Funny - the answer is right under our noses all the time. Probably the best known UK QV of all. Summary: Countach QV #12878 was C323BYV (Campbell Maclaren), 8789SF (Steve Forster), VFS141 (Vic Sawyer) and then C416NGH (Paul Dennis). The car was also C537KTM at some point too according to my records. Thanks for pic of B743WTW - agree that it is probably a 5000S based on B reg. Nothing known of this car, but I'll add it to the list and update the thread if I track anything down.
Guys, anyone know what this is? I found it on my trailer, on the right side towards the rear. The only car on the trailer was my Countach. It seems to be brass (?) with a nut attached to it. It just looks so familiar...... Image Unavailable, Please Login
I dont know about the street use part...but more and more, the evidence points to the "wing" at least for the 89 cars...having been installed AFTER car was produced and checked off by the Factory..then as I have indicated..USA cars shipped with it in the box..or installed AFTER Factory was complete with the car..just a round about way of getting things done...I dont think a "Photograph" of a car in the courtyard or on a "Flyer" with a wing is solid evidence that the factory indeed "installed" the wings on thier cars PRIOR to leaving their control....I dont think back in the day that it was a big Deal to have the local supplier stop by and throw the wing on after the factory was done and prior to it rolling out of the yard......
just stop a second and listen to yourself Roy. is your irrational dislike of Joe so bad that you feel the need to argue a point he makes even when irrevocable evidence is placed before you ? PHOTOS OF MULTIPLE COUNTACH WITH WINGS AFFIXED PRE DELIVERY IN THE FACTORY AND ITS GROUNDS AND ON OFFICIAL FACTORY LITERATURE SEEM TO BE FAIRLY BL**DY CONCLUSIVE ffs just drop the constant BS and sniping at Joe will you, its spoiling the forum for everyone.
OMG why dont you look through the trees...It appears I AM NOT the only one that says the car may not have come this way...So why not lash out at them...? AND it has nothing to do with Joe...ANYONE JUST posting pics...I would question NOT THEM but the pics itself..after all...I am sure you have heard "well it must be true, its on the internet right"?? But can you tell me, by your theory...why all the 89 Countach cars dont have tinted windows..?? I mean after all its "an official" printing..it has a wing..it also has tinted windows...AI dont think there is a chance items where added after the fact for "Bling in advertisement" effect?? But then agian..I dont see a single location on those phots that are dated and SAY "Pre-Delivery", Official Lamborghini Material.. as I suggested..and SO HAVE OTHERS here..the possabilty as has been suggested as I pointed out.. But it is no big deal..its what you want to believe and what you like..who the frick really cares...its just intresting conversation topic...so quit trying to stir the pot...this was a legit observation by others that I as well backed with my information...
yawn still could be worse, could have been yet another advert for a car your trying to flog eh Royboy.
Looking at that photo, the part that comes to mind is one of the lower suspension arms. The part between the two hemi joints. It appears to be a steel tube with a steel nut brazed on to me. I would be interested to hear what it is when you figure it out. Cheers Jim
Those windows aren't tinted, they are blacked out for the photo effect. Comparing tinted windows to a factory installed wing is two different planets.
