Last night was a local car get-together here in town; several of us that attended are from here on F-Chat. A good friend (and member of this forum) showed up with his F40 that he recently got back from the shop where it was at for a number of years; the dream of riding in this particular car has been eluding me for a number of years. Well finally, last night, I got that chance to briefly experience what many people call the most iconic car of all time: the Ferrari F40. This particular car is fitted with a custom straight-pipe exhaust and is in absolutely flawless condition.

Once inside I was surprised at how comfortable the seats actually were; they really hold you in place and are very supportive. The abundance of carbon fiber and raw materials assure the occupants of this car's true purpose. He fired it up and even at idle, the sound and feeling throughout the car was a bit overwhelming. We cruised onto the freeway with an empty on-ramp ahead of us. We started in first gear and took off, not even at full throttle. The car accelerated normally...and then the turbos started to spool. The brief hiss before the delivery of the boost is reminiscent of the moment when a roller coaster is about to descend upon it's first major drop; a brief moment of terror followed by a rush that nothing else in this world can mimic. The tires started to give way and the car broke loose, but as soon as that started, the owner got on the clutch and grabbed second gear. The car settled for a second followed by an even larger boost of power; the turbos hissing away like the snakes on Medusa's head. The engine roared to redline and the boost did not let up one bit; I could hear my own scream following me from behind the seat. Before I knew it, we were rushing by traffic on the freeway as if they were all going in reverse. We braked hard into the next off-ramp and the rear of the car was a bit unsettled, but the owner controlled it perfectly. The only words I remember saying on that drive were "Holy $#!*" and "Oh. My. GOD!!!!"

The F40 is truly a masterpiece. It's absolutely no wonder why these cars are so valuable and sought after by car enthusiasts all over the world.

I'll let the video do the rest of the talking. Once again, thank you Mike.

    Great post.

Why was the car in the shop for years? Is there a thread already on this?

Head gaskets. Its mentioned a few times in the technical section. In a nutshell the car went in for what should have been relatively minor, new valve guides. However all Ferrari F40 head gaskets on the shelf leak, and badly. Mine don't leak ;):D

Great time GB, we'll have to do it again under better conditions!

Most definitely!! We will get together soon and do a nice shoot with it; maybe some sunset/long exposure shots?? Just let me know when!

    Hm...10 hours. Seems fun!!!

I also have a video of this car, from the outside, accelerating down the road. What a sound!!!!! I'll upload it later this evening when I get home.

silverstone to geneva through the chunnel and only stopping for gas. backroads, traffic on the m25, chunnel bs, boring french highways complete with speed nazis. extricated myself from the car and went to bed, and could hardly walk the next day.

next trip to silverstone for the 25th anniversary....the f40 went by truck.

i plan to drive it down to monaco for the tennis, but thats a 4 hour trip (altho i have done it in 3:15 minutes in the cs but dont try that home folks).

Great post and great video, the sound of that F40 gave me instant goosebumps! A passenger ride in an F40 is high up on my Ferrari bucket list!
