Agree completely, this is a ridiculous knee jerk reaction. THERE WILL ALWAYS BE DANGER IN FORMULA ONE, JUST AS THERE WILL ALWAYS BE DANGER IN LIFE. Maybe I should just never leave my bed? I might get hit by an asteroid! Ridiculous. I think PSk did a nice job of putting it in perspective.
Merc ran closed wheel variants at Avus during the fifties with little noticeable advantage. Back then the drivers liked to see which way their wheels were pointed. No joke, there was enough steering lock to make for some doubt at times.
Not that I know enough about the fifties F1 (still learning) but I saw an original Silberpfeil just yesterday at Turins automobile museum.
