I was visiting Melbourne from the US and was hit with 3 speeding violations in a 20 minute stretch of highway (all between 5 and 10kph over the 100 kph limit per speed cameras). Any suggestions on contesting these? Would an approach asking for leniency be effective? I was driving in Australia for the first time, right hand drive etc. Thanks for your help.

not a hope in hell, they are complete Nazis when it comes to speeding fines, if you contest it the beak is more likely to increase the fine, it's a staple source of revenue from them.

They booked a woman 3 times for similar speeds while she was sorting out her dad's funeral some years back, made the TV and she never got off.

    Bugger !

International licence = no demerit points.

(lose 12 points within any 3 year period = loss of licence)

If you love paralegal activities & have plenty of time; its free to play.
Otherwise most likely, simply best to pay.

I'm sure there are a few old rascals here who would disagree & can give you the S.P.

    BTW welcome to Orstralia.

    You forgot the best bits:

25kmh over posted limit = instant loss of license
30kmh = seizure of car for 30 days. Multiple offenders lose car for 3 months

There is a point where they will confiscate the car and either crush it (if you own it) or auction it (for financed cars-$ to finance cpy) but I can't recall exact speed or number of times you have to re offend to qualify.

Oh, if you're driving an exotic or something really expensive you will probably make the news. They like to make examples out of cars/people who will grab attention.

As JM said, it's a major source of revenue that is budgeted for in Victorian Government annual budgets.
But of course the message is it's all about "safety"
If that's the case how come the revenue doesn't go into better roads/driver education etc etc ?

There is no harm writing a letter. Being a tourist unfamiliar to Australian roads is actually a good reason..

Tho realistically you have a better chance of getting away with murder in Australia

    Those penalties are ridiculous.

In Qld we get a lifeline of 2 points for 12 months if you have accumulated 12 demerit points.

I think it's 45 and over for instant loss of license as well.

I completed the 1 year only to start accumulating when Kerrari and I went down to Vic for the Lowe, last year.

I blame her because we were in such a superior car than she is used to,my bravado got the better of me..

The officer who pulled us up(in a Speedcore special, black of course)proceeded to have a yarn to me about his,one time, next door neighbour...............................

Your correct,it's about getting those badly built/maintained and totally uncalled for, high performance cars, that are sold legally in this country, off the road.

We'll just see how your bravado stacks up next time we're closer than 6500km!!!!!!! Oh, and it's a VERY long walk to Wangaratta if your FEOHOS isn't ready in a few weeks; I'm sure you wouldn't want to be seen in "not a real ferrari" 308...

I would assume & would encourage any correction; that an 'international' licence cannot be taken away.

I would be suprised if a few informative & educational pm's havent been flicked off to Scuderia how to mount an adequate argument in his own defence. I have been told of some innovative & imaginative arguments that have in fact met with success. Depends on the luck of the draw of course; who is sitting & the current state of his/her liver & spleen.

Many years ago when a younger man I did recieve a letter from Chief Commissioner of Police in NSW inviting me to 'show cause' why my exemption which allowed me to drive in NSW on a mexican ticket should not be cancelled. (it was a big weekend).

I did reply in the most brusque & fervent tones that I would address the issue in any way I did see fit & regaled him most roundly; particulary regarding the conduct of a very very large and famous Taree constable, who I had experienced the pleasure of stopping me whilst at legal cruising speeds via pointing his handgun at my head through his passanger window. I had met the said constable previously in different vehicle & circumstance; so was at least prepared for what surely what was to come. He was most certianly one extremely dangerous Mo Fo.

Much to my suprise the Chief recontacted me & accepted my argument as valid; hence took no action. I was absolutely amazed, having written to this rather important man in a manner which invited radical & punitive response.

So maybe you just never know when your luck may be in.

Given that our allies the Septics are a better class of foreigner it may just be worth a spin.

It's 1 one point for 12 months and it's 44 km/h over the speed limit for instant loss of licence.

A few years ago my Brother Nick was doing 45 km/h over the limit overtaking some caravans on the Highway and was pulled over by the Highway Patrol coming the other way.

He told Nick it's an instant loss of licence 44 km/h and over, so he "knocked" the fine back to 43 km/h over and Nick recieved an on the spot fine of $1000.

He kept his licence though. He was pulled over driving home from work and the Cop said he will let him keep his licence so he can drive to and from work.

Yes, I can confirm from direct personal experience that the totalitarian rules in the Gulag of Victoria are applied exclusively to the voters of that state.

People from other places are a source of revenue rather than a target of persecution and state endorsed property theft.

That's exactly what happened to me from my trip to Italy last year..

Trouble was some strange deductions occurred over a couple of months some time after and I got the bank to reverse them assuming my card was compromised.

Some months after that I got mail showing list of fines.. but all from 1 day in Rome and nothing from full week driving all over the place beforehand.. and several of THEM timestamped after I had finished with the car and was already at the airport! So I figure the whole lot was suspect.. no speeding all special "zone" things and some such.. I say scam.

They are still sending me mail, notices and etc but good luck with that. The previously deducted amount is safely back with me and staying there.

Yes, that sort of BS is a Scam and is very real. Same as Dodgy Rent A Car companies trying to sting you for minor dents and scrapes. Never happened to me, Touch Wood.

I got a letter from AVIS saying they'd passed on my details to the Stuttgart Polizia over a camera shot on the Autobahn. Haven't had any further comms and it was about 4 years ago. Maybe next time I go through Customs in Germany they might pull me aside.

I'm thinking of getting an Australian Passport, so they might miss me. :D

    Too easy.

I remember that weekend flying nth on the Kahilaround dawn; full tuck on a leading axle 72' GT 750 Ducati at around 85 on the old scale.
Ploddy sitting on the median pinged me from about a mile away.

As I pulled up he did say to me in a laconic manner; "I thought I had a bit of **** in my eye."

    Gotta pay that one! Cheers.
