Ever since installing the capristo 3 exhaust I have been getting the check engine light and codes. The codes are related to the cats not functioning properly. I have checked my joints to make sure there are no leaks and I know the cats were good before installing the capristo. Has anyone else had a similar problem when going to an aftermarket exhaust? Btw car is a 5.2 I hate the thought of having to go back to the stock muffler, cry cry .cry.
What codes are you getting?, are the CATS OEM or after market? Did you reconnect the BYPASS valve vacuum hose?
Cats are aftermarket although I don't know the brand as they were on the car when I bought it. Yep bypass valve vacuum hose is connected and the bypass valve is working fine, rattle and all. This time I only have 5 codes as I pulled 'em before the check engine light actually came on. The last time there were 6 codes when the light finally came on after about 150 miles of driving. P0133- 02 circuit slow response (bank 1, sensor 1) P0432- Main Catalyst efficiency below threshold (bank 2) P0422- Main Catalyst efficiency below threshold (bank 1) P0139- 02 circuit slow response (bank 1, sensor 2) P0153- 02 circuit slow response (bank 2, sensor 1) I don't have my thermocouple after the bypass connected to the exhaust pipe, the nipple is capped on the pipe. The reason for this is because the capristo nipple is on the drivers side of the pipe and the thermocouple only reaches the passenger side as was the location on the oem muffler. I need to spice some wire to the probe so it will reach the bung. I don't think these thermocouple would cause these codes.
Mine has been on for about a thousand miles and no codes at all. I moved my thermocouple ECU a few inches to allow for the thermocouple to reach the bung on the other side, or as I call it the WRONG side. Really for 4gs they could not put one on each side (assuming that some have it on the drivers side at all)? During the 50 or so miles I had my Challenge exhaust on I did not have the upper thermocouple on and didn't get a CEL, but maybe after more miles it would have? I would keep the exhaust and sort the codes, or pull the bulb, this sound is too good to loose.
Are these codes that lite the CEL or are they just pending Maybe some spacers will help but the slow response can be from lazy 02's or back flow from the free flowing exhaust. Had the same as you on mine when I changed exhaust to a modded tubi with hi flo cats You will need the TC in there or you can use a simulator to keep the ECU happy
These 5 codes did not light the CEL this time. What does it mean to say a code is pending? I figured the CEL light hadn't come one since maybe there was a cycle of some sort the ecu went through before it triggered the light. For example last time the CEL came on it was after driving for almost 200 miles, and when I plugged in the scanner there were 6 codes.
I don't want to give up the sound. I just wouldn't be able to get the car past emissions testing once a year with the CEL in the ecu.
Pending codes mean they did show up in the last few drive cycles. let them sit dont erase them for now just drive it. They will come back but see how may actually trip the CEL. drive drive drive Looks like you may just need to get new 02 or even simpler get teh sensors out of the exhaust stream a bit with extenders like these http://www.bigdaddiesgarage.com/angled-cel-fix.html First things first drive that sucker for a while. Like I said I had the same codes and worked on them 1 by 1. Sometimes cleaning up 1 thing will kill all the codes and pop another showing the real issue. I knwo sounds silly but its how these primitive ECUs work. I got past California smog doing this I do have a pending exhaust leak code due to the free flowing exhaust that triggers under a long decel but in 2000 miles she is still pending so dont sweat pending codes, its like the computer saying ...welll maybe its this or maybe this aaaahhh maybe this not that EDIT>.... I almost forgot, did you dis connect the battery then have the car re-learn the new drive parameters ? Disconnect battery 10 min then let idle until fans come on , 20 mile drive will do it Then it will take about 200 miles and 3 cold starts to get past the drive cycle requirements also.
Ignore pending codes, only deal with active codes that trip the CE light. You can get rid of the 432 and 422 codes by using O2 sensor spacers on the post catalyst O2 sensors. I know of a few people that have had to do that either because of aftermarket catalysts or use of aftermarket exhaust (or both) on their 355. Hard to say how long they need to be, these can be stacked. Or you can just start with the longer ones, if they will fit: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Oxygen-sensor-extender-spacer-HHO-Test-Pipe-O2-4-/160874116972?pt=Race_Car_Parts&hash=item2574d8376c&vxp=mtr Start with that and see what happens. If you still get the O2 sensor codes, you may need to replace them.
I hooked up the scanner again today and I have 2 permanent codes although no check engine light, maybe because I haven't driven at least 200 miles. P0133- 02 Circuit slow response (bank 1, sensor 1) P0153- 02 Circuit slow response (bank 2, sensor 1) What can I do about these? Clean the sensor? Would spacers do anything for the pre cat o2 sensors? I'm sure it has something to do with the new Capristo since hadn't had any problems in the previous 4k miles. I still have the other codes pending.
If they did not throw the CEL just keep driving. If you try fixing things now you will just be chasing your tail. When the CEL light comes on then we will be able to move forward All the pending codes mean is at one time 02 sensor was slow to respond. so far so good Patience patience grasshopper
+1 ........ wait till the codes repeat themselves ....... if the OP wants to emissions test ........ it can be done with as much as 1 pending code, all but 1 sensor self test completed and no CEL illuminated ..........
