Low lights don't come on

I have a Mondial QV. When I turn on the switch for lights the headlamps
swing up but the is no headlamp lit.
I took the car to SF Ferrari for them to look at. They came to the
conclusion I had a bad switch and wanted to order the switch
from Ferrari. I took the car home and ordered the part from the Ferrari
Exchange in Sacramento. They sent me the wrong item. I hooked it
up anyway and everything seemed to work according to the book except
no headlights. I sent the part back and told them it wasn't the correct
part. They sent me a fresh one just taken off a Mondial of my model year.
I hooked that on up and it still didn't fix the headlight problem.

Anyone have any ideas???

This is actually how it should work (with the stalk in the uppermost position)

Do you mean:

Case 1 = turn end knob with stalk in uppermost position = only parking lights come "on", headlight pods come up, all headlights "off"

Case 2 = move stalk down one position = parking lights stay "on", but low beam headlights do not work

Case 3 = move stalk to bottommost position = parking lights stay "on", but high beam headlights do not work

Anyway, please describe what you get (or don't get) in all three cases.

 

What version 1985 Mondial QV -- US or euro?

I'm not hopeful that this will be an easy fix. Since the bulbs themselves (parking lights and headlights) are all doing the right thing = that's a good sign that the headlight switch assembly is OK and working correctly. However, since the pods (wrongly) come down in Case 2 and Case 3 = that hints that you have an internal short on your fuse-relay PCB (but I'll take a closer look at things on the schematic once I know if US or euro).

 

MY OM says it's US. I've pulled the PCB to check for bad paths and burns but
I found nothing.

What is the 4th digit of your VIN -- "L" or "U" or ?

I've done a little pre-looking and there may be hope for an easier fix -- one thing that I didn't know before is that on Euro Mondial QV the headlight pods don't come up with only the parking lights "on" (so there's more relay complexity added to the PCBA -- to both euro and US Mondial QV). As a first check, can you confirm that the relay in the bottom right corner ("relay for light lifting motors with low beams on") is a ...101 type relay?

 

The fourth digit in my VIN is a "U"

Relay "B" and "D" are 101 type relays. RH & LH lifting motor

Relay"L" & "M" are 113 type relays. Low and high Beam headlights.

 

All good -- what about relay "U"?

 

Couple other questions:

1. Did it: A) work OK and then went bad, or B) never worked right as long as you've owned the car?

2. Have you checked ALL of the fuses? (The copy I have of the 1984-85 US Mondial QV wiring diagram is very poor quality, and I can't figure out how the headlight pods come up when only the parking lights are "on", but it does seem that there is a separate fuse for the headlight lifting motors when in the low beam mode or high beam mode.)

 

There are separate fuses for low and high beams
Check the bulbs too a voltage spike may have blown them--did that on an X1/9 years ago.
And my middle child like to gave me a heart attack when she called me 15 min after prom let out before I found out she did not have headlights--had stalk in upper position--I trhought she had been hit lol.

 

Relay "U" is a type 101

The lighting system worked. I happened to check on it and that's when I found out
nothing was working right.
SF Ferrari found a bunch of bad grounds. They cleaned up what they could.
Their tech found a short to ground through a relay. He removed the steering
steering wheel and traced it back to the steering wheel column light switch.
They wanted to order a new assembly. They are making them again in Italy for
$1600. I refused service because I could get one from a salvage yard for much
less. I plugged the one from the salvage yard in and I still have the same problem(better to be out $600 than $1600).
Are you looking on Figure 10 of the wiring diagrams? My copy is a bit more legible.
I'd be more than happy to copy my manual and mail it to you.

Just a thought but maybe I can bypass this mess. I could
wire a relay in parallel with the high beam and low beam relays.
When they actuate I can have them feed the lift motor relays.

The bad news is that I believe that they made a mistake on the US Fig 10 schematic as (the way the wiring is shown on Fig 10) the headlight pods should behave just like the euro version (i.e., stay down when only the parking lights are "on", and only rise when the low or high beams are selected). Consequently, this will be more guessing than certainty, but, IMO, the first thing to try is to put a different ...101 in the "relay U" position as described in your OM (on the schematic they call this same relay "relay v") -- I'd suggest using the ...101 relay presently in the relay R position (as this relay R is not used when the engine is not running). Please try that and report back if there is any difference, or not, in the three Cases.

That's a bit of a baffling result for relay U so a little more there please:

Also, can you please confirm/deny if there is a female metal terminal in the relay U socket at the terminal 87 position?

(I apologize for groping a bit, but Fig 10 shows that Relay D should not change state unless Relay U changes state -- which does not match your result so that makes me doubt Fig 10 even more.)

For a euro, the relays have different names and different physical locations on the PCB, but the initial diagnostic strategy would be the same (the relay letters and names are from your 241/82 OM):

Remove relay T "Relay for light lifting motors (with low beams on)" (with all other relays in place). Confirm relay T is of the ...101 type. Measure the voltage between terminal 85 and terminal 86 in the relay T socket for the three cases (don't worry about what the lights or pods are doing):

Case 3 = ?V

The good news is that the euro schematic makes sense for the three cases as described by the OM:

If you can provide those 6 voltage measurements, it may yield a clue as to what is wrong.
