Rich was naive enough to accept an invitation to bag his 2nd 14er. He arrived Saturday for dinner with a bribe of a case of Alaskan Amber which happens to be the favorite for both of us---a plus. He also prefers Ferraris with roofs---another plus. He likes to climb--still another plus. But he is a native of Texas and I'll have to find a way to forgive him of that.

I gave him a choice of several fairly easy ones to climb and he chose 14,336 ft LaPlata---the toughest of the group. A side note--his first was Crestone Needle which is one of the hardest but, by his own admission, he was 3 years younger, 10 lbs lighter and in much better shape!

Once above about 14K, he accused me of trying to kill him so I could buy his GTB cheap!

It was a perfect Colorado Sept day with purple skies and unlimited visibility. It was great to be alive.

Dave made it look easy, but he was patient with me. The state should really look into putting more oxygen up there. Beautiful day. Perfect for a summit lunch. Here's Dave letting me catch my breath after the first set of switchbacks. I don't know if he ever even got winded.

Nothing like reaching the summit and realizing that you're not on the summit. When I hit that first peak to the left, I was at 14,000 feet. I still had 336 feet to go...and I felt every one of those 336 feet.

Gotta love the false summits. Humboldt Peak (14064') in the Sangre de Cristo range has at least two false summits if you take the west-to-east approach (IIRC). Thought I would never get to the top of that one. ;)

Sorry I missed it. Too busy with family stuff. Maybe in a few weeks or just wait until next year.
