Plenty of power, fresh charged battery. Had not started in about a month and now nothing. lights and everything else work. Could the battery be the problem, not enough ooomph to crank the starter? It is over 5 years old. I will check the voltage and draw on it with the key in the cranking position.

Any other idea what might cause the problem?

You have the answer yourself imo Ken: over 5 years old .... ;)

It's discribed here before (but may be a little bit dangerous): at the back of the starter, you could try to make contact between the two big poles .... and see ...

That may be the only way to find out or get another battery to try it .... not a big deal .... like any other car ...

This is the best way to go about it, but (assuming that your headlights are fairly bright -- indicating the battery is OKish) two easy things that you can do before even doing that is:

    1. wiggle/unplug/reseat the w and y white connectors on the fuse-relay panel, then try to start

    , and, if still no-go,

    2. wiggle/unplug/reseat the square 9-pin C11 connector under the coolant tank.

Tried those already Steve, no luck. I am just going to take the battery out after work Today and bring it up to Advanced Auto, let them test every thing on there big tester and then I will either pick up a fresh battery or start the hunt.

Try tapping on the starter with a wooden mallet or an object. Sometimes they will start spining again. TAp it good in couple of places five to ten times and then try starting it.

Took the battery out and down to advance, they set it up on the test bed and connected it. It says it supposed to be 700CCA and 850CA.

Test results................ a whopping 37CCA, had 12.7 volts but no amps. SHOT!

Get the new battery in, they had an exact replacement, get out my key and nothing.

So I go an unplug the white connectors Steve had showed earlier, tried again nothing, tried wiggling the black ones under the expansion tank and then it started.

So it was a definite bad battery and some bad connections.

    Thanks all

Totally agree Sebastian, I have recieved alot of help over the 5 years of ownership-which has saved many hundreds/thousand of ££££££s and in addition, it has given me the confidence to "work" on my beloved rossa too !!! ( albeit in a basic way)

A wonderful resource provided by very generous owners and fellow Ferraristi !!!

I am now going straight to the subs page to pay my dues :) Forza Ferrari !!!!
