Don't know anything about Michael, but, Mario had just 2 Countachs at his Nazareth, Pennsylvania home: the pearl white 1987 car, and the red Anniversary.

Both cars were in accidents, NOT by Mario.

Mario himself is meticulous with car-care. I had his red Annivesario very briefly after he owned it. It had about 3,500 miles and the entire car including the driver seat looked brand new. I remember saying to myself: "whomever owned this car knew how to get in & out of it very carefully".....

I have now sold it twice. Once last year. Again this past week.

 

Gentlemen, Peter, Countach QV, et al, what would you estimate is a true value of the 1987 Andretti Countach as it sits today?

 

Well its going to be hard to say with the mystery cloud on the front end.

I'll have to assume that:

1. the front hit indicated by the lenses and side lights was not structural. A structural hit would throw the value off based on how it got repaired.

2. My personal premium for an Andretti car is around $10K. I would say its a bit higher than the K. Rosberg car. That can vary based on the buyer. An Andretti fan may go above and beyond. I go with that because of the special Andretti signatures but Andretti never played a role in CTs like Wolf.

3. car is a very good shape driver.

So the upper range for an injected in very good shape being 110-125K, I'll put the car at $130K and take out cost for any major issue from there. At the end of the day the car value remains in the very upper range of comparable injected.

 

Countach QV,
If you believe the value of that car is $130K then it must have been a screaming buy for the 3 or so years it sat on the market with the owner finally taking $115K.

If his signature means so much, I believe I can procure one for you for only half the $10K premium you think it should command.

 

that car was advertise somewhere as a perfect car. My assumption is to beleive that until a PPPI gets done. In general a perfect FI will go up there. The car has less than 10K miles.
There is a bragging factor to own an Andretti car as well.

I beleive that car was advertised for long well over $115K but if you say that it was at $115K 3 years ago, then OK. Remember that 3 years ago you could buy a 5000S for $95K ( i knew one for sale that got passed becauses found a bit too expensive).
In the past 2 years the market hass moved.
That said then one has to wonder why a perfect FI sat over the past 2 years at market price with little CT to buy from.

If it got sold at $115K then it was not so perfect and price was adjusted consequently. It is hard to judge a car price without seeing the flaw. Also note than when a car sits too long it also tends to undersell.

 

Thank you gentlemen for the discussion on values of estimating a value on the 1987 Andretti QV as it sits. FWIW its not a sales reason I have in mind. More on that later.

I love Mario Andretti, and he was a World Driving Champion. But when his Countach Anniversario sold, it didn't bring a nickel over similar value for a Countach Anniversario of same miles & condition.

My wife & I came home tonight after dropping our son off at UCLA with me raring to impart so much more useful information. You will notice that user Bradjohnston has been banned. Perhaps this will serve as a pointed reminder that there are some who will go to whatever lengths necessary to keep the playing field fair.

 

Well that red anniv was involved in a publicly visible crash. It is a surprise if it brought the same money as a non crashed anniv.
The point made about the lenses and the blinkers is well taken. There is always the possibility of a cracked lense and only the frosted replacement are easily available so both have to be replaced ( I have seen this for euro front bumpers).
There is also some significant work being done on the car. I guess the car is far from perfect and may be that car is more at the lower end of an FI value before any restoration. I still favor the Andretti name for a premium but that premium is religious belief for each individual and any true premium would result in an aggregate of what most CT buyers think.

If indeed a crash was bad on the car, the front of the chassis ought to bear marks of repairs. If the lenses are damages as well as requiring new blinkers, there has to be structural marks that cannot be hidden to an expert, no? If so then the value drops to $80-85K.
There are enough unmolested injected on the US market to bother with a tainted car.
This begs another question. when a car has crashed, what's an owner to do to rid the crash stigma from the car? Can it be done? I recall some F GTO beign entirely rebuilt and claming big values still. What is the differentiator between say a very rare car and a car like an CT FI ?

Again, I am not saying the car crashed or not, I have no proof myself but Joe seem to have them. If that is the case, then it would be interesting to know when and who "omited" this from the records. These records may have been withdrawn from the car history otherwise how could a non interested party have them?
Also, any muti-party accident should show up in a carfax.

 

Countachqv: perhaps I should have clarified that Andretti's former red Anniversario sold without any premium because of his name BEFORE it had its well-publicized accident. I have no clue what's happened since it has been crashed as I have not had any reason to investigate.
