I might take that bet 2014. I think Perez is very talented. Button is good and comfortable there, I think he's the obvious team #1.

I'm not sold on Perez's pace yet. Sure he has good weekends where Sauber's strategy propels him up there, but Kobayashi has owned him in qualifying and Perez certainly has weekends where he's invisible.

Perez will hold his own. Is he that once in a generation talent that's going to come in and blow Button away, no. However, I think after some time to adjust to the team/car, he'll be equal, if not slightly quicker, than Button.

Jenson is now the undisputed number 1 at McLaren. Its better for him and for Perez.

As much as I like Perez I have to agree that he has not shown the raw pace in qualifying that great driver displayed early in their careers. He is a very good driver but it almost seems that Mclaren already had the smarts and strategy traits with Jenson.

This is what Whitmarsh said and I hope he's right.

"It was a string of giant-killing performances, a trio of podiums and a brilliant fastest lap in this year's Monaco Grand Prix that showed us that Sergio lacks nothing in terms of speed and commitment"

I think it would have done Perez good to stay at Sauber another year. I think he has potential and he might excel after 2013, but hopefully he isn't thrown into too much pressure too quickly at Mclaren

Not as good as DiResta would have.

+1. I think Perez is a talent, but something about going from a small team to a big one makes certain drivers freak out (at times). For every Kimi or Fernando there is a Rubens or Felipe.

We will see how he handles being a front-runner.

Agree. I think Perez is easy on tires so he is able to move up to the field by jumping pit stops. His success centers around pit strategy.

OTOH, I think DiResta is a racer...

Perez just named Adrian Fernandez (former cart driver and team owner) his manager. He apparently worked on Perez's deal with McLaren.

Good for Adrian. He's a nice guy and seems to have a lot of luck too.

Adrian is a nice guy, I have met him many times and several friends have worked for him over the years. He broke his hip right in front of me at a CART race in Vancouver years ago.

That said he can rot in hell for the way he suddenly sold out Champcar and moved his team to the EARL. That showed a serious lack of ethics and morals. He might fit in well in F1. Bugger him with a rusty pitchfork.

    So Telmex v Vodafone:

Does this mean Perez says adios to Carlos?

Does this mean that Telmex will buy Vodafone?

Does this mean that Vodafone will buy Telmex?

    Does Telmex stay with Sauber?

The first thing for Sergio will be to improve qualification. McLaren will help him a lot.
With Sauber, several times the team decided to wait, to save tires and so on. I'm not
too sure all his Q2 blunders were because he couldn't put a lap together; both the team
and him had part of that. For sure at McLaren, he'll have to step it up and having
LH engineers will be a tremendous advantage. It'll be fascinating to see how he
matches with Jenson as the season goes on. From December and in the first tests
Perez will have to work very hard to get acclimatised in the car/team.

On race days it may be different. He's more patient than what people give him credit
and we now know that he can push when needed. If he can qualify close to JB then
he'll have a better chance in the race. I can't wait to next year to be honest.

This is an interesting question, especially since America Movil (Temlex) recently bought a 23% stake in Telekom Austria

I think Vodafone stays put and Telmex continues to support Perez's as a personal sponsor in some form. Telmex remains with Sauber and gives the vacant seat to Esteban Gutierrez

Perez is a driver who can get the performance out of the car without destroying the tyres in the process.

I for one think he'll do very well at Maccy-L's.
No matter what your opinion of Maccy-L might be, they're no mugs when it comes to drivers, they've seen that Perez has a natural talent and that's why they've hired him.

Frankly, I think Ferrari has dropped the ball on this one!

Not if they're getting Vettel or Schumacher. Otherwise, yeah, I'd agree.

I suspect Vettel is on his way to the Scuderia for 2014, and if so then not hiring Perez will not be the biggest disaster in the World.
(Bear in mind though that so far my predictions have gone as well as the replacement officials in the NFL! ).

Alonso/Vettel could be an interesting pairing and Vettel might keep Alonso's appetite for racing alive for a while longer, but there is also the danger that the rivalry could be damaging to the team.

Schumacher back to Ferrari? - despite what others on here might want, I just don't see it happening, not after the way he left the Scuderia (cue an announcement tomorrow that Schumacher is to rejoin Ferrari!) .
I'm also not convinced that Alonso/Schumacher would work that well as a team (too many loyalties would be split within the team).

Alonso/Perez would have been a more natural, less disruptive pairing within the team, and I think Perez would have learnt a lot from Alonso before eventually taking over from him as the team leader.

I think Perez will do well at McLaren.....however, at Ferrari he could have done even better!

Much like Alonso/Schu, I don't see Alonso/Vettel materializing. I can see Seb replacing Alonso when he decides to hang up his pilot's gloves, but two alpha dog, WDC's does not a good team make.

Just IMO....I could certainly be wrong
