Interesting indeed..... Isn't the Pygmy on record as saying (just after Monza?) that he'd heard the engine at Maranello and thought it sounded good? No idea where he gets the "30% of the cost" #...... Makes no sense to me. I've gotta be honest; 1 - The source doesn't seem the best. 2 - Any "journalist" (sic) that believes the original proposal was for V4 turbo's doesn't garner much respect in my eyes! OTOH, would make Lulu's move look an even bigger disaster if true! Cheers, Ian
I've read reports that there is no going back - all the engine manufacturers, barring Cosworth who will not build a V6, are well along on converting their engine dyno facilities over to running the V6s rather than the V8s - apparently they aren't easily interchangeable? Most of the dyno work over the next 12 months will focus on V6 development, not V8 development, and the investment in switching over to V6 testing is not something the engine manufacturers will want to just throw away. Either the report is false, or Bernie is losing it, or Bernie is just playing games again, maybe trying to distract from his pending indictment in Germany (like his London Olympic facility GP story recently, just smoke and mirrors)
The report was absent of facts, only quoted sentiment and innuendo. The teams are so far along already that I can't see Bernie just pulling the plug due to sound. Then again, it's Formula One, where 'anything can happen and it usually does'...
AFAIK all the manufacturers are using AVL test beds, the dynos slightly modified for the higher revs. The more important things for the actual test bed work are the software, measurement devices etc, and those shouldn't be any different, presumably off the shelf AVL stuff, too.
Turbo V6s are happening in 2014, the big teams have put massive dollars into developing them already. I hear they sound absolutely incredible and are definitely worthy of F1.
Yeah theres no way that these engines can be scrapped after so many millions have been dumped into their development
Anybody read the part about FIA wanting more money? For a bigger office (quote Bernie)? Is he being sarcastic?
This may throw a bit of light on the matter Pete. http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2012/10/01/scrapping-engine-rules/#comments Or the easy way, blame Mosley for the mess he left..
Luca seems to disagree with you. And he has heard them! "I listened to the noise of the engines in Maranello the other day, the new engine and the old engine, and even Luca di Montezemolo said it sounded terrible and didn't like it," Ecclestone told the Hindustan Times. http://www.planet-f1.com/driver/3213/8129603/Bernie-wants-rid-of-V6-engines I too am certain that they will sound awful compared to the crisp sound of the N/A V8s. Just listen to the turbocharged Indy cars this year. Pathetic!
Per MBHPE, they sound awesome. That's my source anyway. I'll have to make up my own mind once the time comes.
Never heard of a turbo engine that is as nice sounding as a rivaling N/A engine. It makes sense really, since the turbocharger muffles the air intake noise and also the whole thing revs much lower than an atmospheric unit.
While partly true, I think they'll sound just fine. They are restricted to 15K rpm, but they're also V6's, which should help. Certainly, they got to sound pretty damn good the first time round, and they were I4's. Having said that, when Renault first turned up (at either Brands or Silverstone) how we laughed at the "silly Frenchmen" with their silly little motor that made hardly no noise! While it took 'em a while (and some truly spectacular kablamos!) they got to sound good in the end and remain the most powerful F1 engines ever - Even while revving to "only" ~12K..... Cheers, Ian
Indeed. I'd throw the Matra V12 into the mix as well - Friggin' thing was, for reasons unknown, completely unique - Very different sound to the Ferrari 12's of the same era. While many consider it "boring", I'll always recognize & love the good ol' DFV - Crackling on the overrun on a cold morning at Brands..... I can hear 'em now. Cheers, Ian
That holds true only for the quali specials that had some 5+ BAR of pressure and lasted only a handful of laps. Then again the 2004 V10s also had 1000 CV but sounded 100 times better. I am hoping that the new 1.6s will be scrapped to be honest. Cheers, Alex
That's true, but even in race trim they were up to ~1,000HP and sounded the same - Which was pretty darn good IMO. Fair enough. Personally, I wouldn't go as far as "100 times" better, but they sure sounded good. We'll find out soon enough I guess. I do think they're coming, and they'll be right around 800-900HP, same as now - Much more and the safety commission gets "nervous" and starts applying restrictions. I need to check - anyone know if they will have to last 5 races? [Or 7, or whatever it is now?] Cheers, Ian
Pat Symonds said that the new engines will be making circa 650 horses. Another 120 are expected for short bursts by the ERS that will replace the KERS. The current V8s produce 730-750 CV, depending on the manufacturer.
