that was exactly my point! no one here as far as i know does leakdown tests .....some workshops look at you with an empty expression when u say "leakdown test boleh kah?".....

i think it's not that difficult to have compression test, leakdown test & cylinder deactivation test.. I'm surprised even NI doesn't has leakdown test, how about compression test?

compression test is done by all of them....its relatively a simple procedure....i doubt the gauge will cost much as well.....we could buy them and do it ourselves....i might consider getting one myself......
as for the leakdown test, the whole setup is a little bit more complicated as compressed air has to be shot down the cylinders....however as i said, both rigs can be DIYed and the tests could be done ourselves......

Wow, u guys are serious. For the performance cars, I usually "buy" the seller first. Good cars come from good owners, usually :D

As for anything more than 20yrs, I would buy with an intention for rebuild unless it has a FSH plus a proper testdrive.

Btw, there's a 348 for sale in KL for just Rm100K with EM. I think parts alone are worth that!

that's very true, but however sometimes the book and the cover don't add up....i know of this one guy who is purportedly very respected in the supercar business in the country who has a nice fancy showroom and states that he knows this Tan Sri and that Sultan and when you check into one of his cars or the technicalities he talks about, things just don't add up....so at the end of the day its a PPI and a test drive which cuts it.......one joker once told me, "this is a Ferrari, not a Proton, if you see it you like it you buy it..it's all about how you feel about it..cannot test drive all"......i just walked away ......

Jon, did u see the details of the drive?

Yep, call them for more details. I didn't really see the car properly but it's in their workshop & externally look decent. There's a nice violet E36M3 for sale with JT cars & that's Rm95K. The problem with 348+ is their maintenance, it hurts the pocket.

For me, the thing about buying used performance cars is buy the best you can afford. Pay more for a better example or buy one cheap for project.

All the old ferraris that I've had never had engine trouble, it's usually down to electrics or transmission that's abused or wear & tear. Porsches, all of them leak a little even up to 997s but my last two 997s were fine though. My 1st 911SC had a pool of oil every morning & smokes when the leak touches the exhaust but still brought me up & down KL-Sg several times. One thing I learnt is, keep them as original as possible, the more we try to upgrade them, the more issues they give.

    The drive? Let me see...

Yep. Especially garage queens! I'll usually check with the mechanic who maintains the particular car whenever possible to know more history as the sales will never dwell into that. Also seen plenty of owners who redline their cars on cold starts just to show-off

Must say plenty of crooks still exist in this trade. Just got a sour deal for wife's car last month. Sigh.

sorry to hear about that..what happened and what ride was it (if you don't mind me asking).......the 2nd hand car market has the shadiest of shady characters!!! i guess the bigger the marque, the bigger the risk and therefore the bigger the caution one has to take... and when it involves an F-car (or the likes) its even a bigger ball game altogether.....

oh yeah the date is 28th of this month (Sunday).....drive to Sauk, Perak and for a good lunch i heard! not sure what the speciality in Sauk is but i heard the lunch would be brilliant ( but then again we're from Ipoh and nothing beats food here.....even the stuff from glorified Penang! ha!)
and the last drive was exhilarating.......it was my first and loved it! the 348 is just raw....way too raw.....!!!

you can say that again.....not going out the previous night if i'm driving at 7.30am the next morning and have to be awake by 6.30!......luckily i had a good liver which processed off all the stuff from the previous night pretty fast!!!haha

and the problem is the stupid bullet connector...it happened again in Lenggong just after our breakfast......need to go see the local mechanic to prob get rid of it and put in a straight connector......

I think it's the brake booster.. the brake pedal goes back to original position slower after braking, and the braking effect last a little longer than usual.. so quite difficult to regulate the braking if drive fast.. I wanted to get it fix but I have another car in my regular workshop waiting for sparepart. cant leave 2 cars there as the workshop has limited parking space. i'll try :)

you believe it or not my mechanic is also my Volvo mechanic! he does only Volvos and my 348 is an exception! well he did warn me he doesnt know anything about F-cars in the beginning but since the car is still very mechanical, what i do is, i get the stuff off the net for stuff which aren't straight forward, we go through it and he does the work! so far so good! haha....well its a car after all.....and having less electronics than the newer ones, any good mechanic with a good understanding of the system can work on it.....i'm sure your 944 is in the same bracket...perhaps take it to him and we can ask him about it.....just buy the parts......what's your other car in the workshop?

well the 308 and the 328 are exactly the same car with the difference being the slight increase in engine displacement and a slighty more rounded front and rear end trims....of course the later 328s had abs and that changed the suspension set up a little... i think the difference between the first year production 348 and later 348s or the first year production 355 vs the later year 355s had more difference than the 308 and 328......
