It may have been Fred, because Phil would have moved over for him, like he did in Germany. Today, the press conference asked Massa about his long time without a podium, but never mentioned that he actually gave away a poduim spot to FA. Massa never mentioned it.

A rational post given the Ferrari's lack of speed. Team effort and Massa carried the Scuderia flag well when most said he has zero hope.

It shows that once the team can concentrate on Massa, he can pull something out of the hat as well. Great drive, beating the two McLarens and one Sauber fair and square. At Suzuka no less, considered by the whole F1 paddock as a driver's track.

is coming in SECOND good enough for Ferrari fans? :D

    Nice drive anyway, Phil.

I was going to tun off the race after Fred was out. Glad I held on. You never know what's going to happen in an F1 race nowadays. Never.

In a race where Alonso had despaired of getting on the podium?

    Dang right.

Pity he was stuck behind Kobi and Button until Vettel was so far out front.
Although nobody was going to catch Vettel in this one.

But let me ask: Which current Ferrari driver has gotten to within *one corner* of the WDC with Ferrari? :D
(Despite all the team fiasos in the pits. Remember the pit light system?)

And does anyone remember a certain intentional crash by another team that stole the Singapore race that year? Remember what driver stole that race?

    Said Vettel to Alonso.

    Three times. ;)

Shall we count the number of times Alonso has tolerated letting a teammate close enough to make him part of a WCC team?
Well, there was McLaren ... oh wait. :p

Yes and he folded like a Cannes beach chair at the end of the season and left. True mark of the 'competitor' lol! He ran from Mclaren to Renault a mid pack team rather than face LH. Not a great chapter in his career.

In that I don't see anyone better suited to take the number two seat (fast but not so fast as to upset Alonso) I really hope that today's podium boosts Phil's confidence to the level where he can provide some WCC points. And deny WDC points to Alonso's competition.

1st podium in 33 races, great drive by Massa. For Ferrari's sake I hope this newfound confidence continues for the next 5 races and Massa takes points from Alo's competition.

It's a long shot but Alo can still win this...

The question I want to ask, and I don't want flaming for it, it's just purely for interest in comments.

Is the current Ferrari F1 car really that bad, as in (Massa can get it on the podium,) and/or is he is better than some think but don't give him credit for, or is it the car that is better than some think.

I have no doubt that Alonso can make it look better than it is, but it is somewhat making a real judgement on the out right race pace of the car itself harder to judge.

End of the day it is probably just a mixture of events and track layouts, I thought Ferrari was all out at sea for this race, but bingo they yet again get a result.

That's why they run the races.
    ;)

Not to take anything away from Massa, but just look at how much better the RB was.
Macca was on what they said going in was the wrong setup and anyone else capable of a good result had one form of bad luck or another.
Phil was able to take advantage but the result was a fluke in terms of the car's abilities.
Alonso has best be working on his rain dance.

Yes it's why they run ;).

So circumstances got Massa his result, that's your take but I am still all ears, am not 100% sure the car is as bad as some proclaim, and I concur I take nothing away from Massa's result today was a fine drive.

Had he survived Alonso would have been a distant second.
Clifford has improved more than anyone could have reasonably expected but its not in the same class as the RB. Probably not as good as the Macca either. Nor the Sauber.

For the sake of debate, I'am trying to get a edge on things, you see given the relative difference apparent in performance over the season between Massa and Alonso, (yes I know Massa may have been testing new stuff out on the car in races) but if Alonso had been in Massa's position, lets say he had closed down Massa, and Massa had waved him on, would he have closed down Vettel.

If you think yes, then I believe you could not say that Clifford was a dog.

Sorry just reread your post a distance 2nd fair enough..

Funny how with Alonso out Phil benefits from Ferrari pit strategy. Usually he loses positions due to pit timing.

    Just saying...

I don't see any team sabotaging a driver but if there are a limited amount of assets to be divvied up someone has to benefit.
True for Alonso. True for Jensen.
    Nothing wrong with that.

Taking points away from Fred's competition was huge on a day that Fred got no points. Nil, none, nada, zilch, zero.

If Fred wins the WDC he will owe some more thanks to Phil.

Too bad Phil's car wasn't good enough to take first.

    Errrr false.

It's the only reason why they have frequently pitted both Massa and Alonso back to back during a race...it's up to Massa to deliver the race pace, if he is on the same pace as Alo he almost always gets the same pit strategy. If he is off the pace why would he get preferential pit treatment?

Same goes with McLaren and also please re-look at the pit times, they are all pretty spot on for both teams' drivers; McLaren having issues at the beginning of 2012 but everything after has been almost the identical on avg.
