I have to stop looking at this thread. Everytime I open it, I get the urge to build another rc plane. You all are killing me. Mark
This is it! My next plane, im in LOVE <3 Balsa built, covered wings etc made by Kyosho not cheap though I loved the animated movie "Porco Rosso" Image Unavailable, Please Login
Macchi S33, a little different to Porco Rossos Savoia S.21 (the real S.21 is a biplane I believe) As close as you can get without a scratch build I suppose Just need to find a Japanese hobby store that will ship...
wow that Macchi is beautiful! Did a little work on the Dual Radjet last night. Shaped the bluefoam central wing, fit carbon wing spars (5mm tube running wing tip to wing tip, two 4mm rods one ~1/2 way in wings and another in front just into the wings), test fit ESCs and three micro metal gear servos. Now adding CF strips to the nose structures then will glue everything together, properly hinge the ailerons and central elevator, mount the motors and wire everything up. Then the fun of programming the radio for differential thrust and central elevator mixing... That's looking really great, have a look at this would be great for your Mustang http://www.mrrcsound.com/ So I'm not sure what's worse, my impulse buying or my rc plane addiction... Unfortunately the side air scoop was missing from the box so I'll have to source one or I can print a new one on my mates 3D printer. Then again in my defense I was a plane short since writing off the T-28... Just did the flap mod, no maiden just yet it's crazy outside 20-30 knots of wind not to mention my hayfever has never been worse (home sick) Image Unavailable, Please Login
I am with you on the airplane addiction/impulse buying. I just can't help myself. Congrats on the bF-109! I really enjoy mine. Be ready...this model has "character". It flies like a true warbird, and not a bank-n-yank sport plane like the T-28. With mine, the biggest issue is abrupt up elevator inputs resulting in the right wing stalling and an ensuing violent 180 degree snap roll. In other words, if you try to suddenly pull up, you immediately find yourself inverted and headed straight for the ground. It will happen in turns as well if you feed in too much up elevator too quickly. The key is to just be smooth with your inputs and keep your airspeed up. On the boards, some other guys have had this problem and some have not. Maybe your plane won't be affected as badly. I have also read that shifting the CG rearwards a bit can help. Also landings are tricky with the narrow wheelbase. Flaps help a lot. See my previous post from this thread: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showpost.php?p=141340302&postcount=145 Also, PLEASE let me know if you find a source for the side scoop. I lost mine when I crashed into a lake on my my maiden flight (see post referenced above). The only way Horizon sells it is in conjunction with a complete fuselage kit, and I'm not paying $35 or whatever for a little scoop.
Thanks for the info, I haven't read up too much about it I had no idea my friend usually throws his Spitfire all over the place with no issues so I'll have to be careful then. I found lately that I've been flying a lot more scale like which in this case should help, I did note the tail to be absolutely TINY! Although I'm glad PZ decided to keep it scale and not enlarge it. I've done the flap mod already, at this stage I'll be flying it with the gear down to get used to it but I'd imagine in the future I'll be hand launching her. As for the scoop, I posted my issue over on Rcgroups and got a PM from someone stating they may have one left over from a crash they could send me. I'd imagine there'd be a lot of other people with a spare scoop handy as this airplane is fairly old 2010 release? Dynam also make a 109 but their plane is 1270mm X 1163mm compared to PZ's 1105mm X 1000mm so the scoop is a tad bit larger. But they do sell it as part of the plastic set replacement http://www.nitroplanes.com/60p-bf109-09.html Item#: 60P-BF109-09 $5.40!! I wonder how much bigger it really is
Albeit we are new to this forum, we have some reviews of the Mr RC Sound system on our site that you may be interested in. http://www.randyRCplanes.com/sound "Randy" Randy RC Planes
I have the spitfire, and it cannot be yanked around. Pull hard on the elevator and it will roll over. Go here for cheap retracts. It really speeds up the plane. Much cheaper than factory stuff, and very strong. So much better looking in the air too. http://z8rc.com/2011/12/parkzone-spitfire-mk-ix-10-landing-gear/
I was able to pick up a finished plane and radio for about $150. I practiced with Clearview flight sim and a cheap Chinese computer controller. I didn't dare fly until I got used to turning opposite what is natural when facing the plane. I was interested for a time, but stopped because any guidance or control above a certain speed. Regards Sid Nitrotek
Thanks! Those sound systems are neato but no way I'm spending $100++ on one. That's almost halfway to a FPV set-up! This weekend might be the last decent flying opportunity before the big freeze so stopping by Bong field after golf tomorrow with the Mustang and the Stinger/Ferrari jet, then also Sunday when there should be a big group of flyers. Pheasant season starts tomorrow so the field is closed until 2PM The Stinger jet now has a slightly bigger motor (technically not rated for 4S but people do run them. Pulls about 350W on 3S vs 290W with the stock motor. I wimped out testing 4S, over 350W at half throttle. 30k+ rpm in my (gloved) hand was enough!), larger 65A ESC I had kicking around (relocated in the left air intake for cooling and to free up space for a 4S 2700mAh battery), and with a nose job after she spiked. Still not sure what happened. About 2 minutes into her last flight a few weeks ago suddenly she started momentarily snap rolling. Thought I had her leveled out, reduced power and turned her to me for a emergency landing then she stalled and went straight in. Not sure if it was the cheapo RX or a bad aileron servo, so I replaced the RX and have tested the servos for about 50 cycles with no repeat. Accordioned the nose a little (would have been MUCH worse if I hadn't pre-reinforced with CF strips) so did some reforming (nice thing about EPO, if it get scrunched, not torn, dip it in hot water and it can be bent back to a large degree), sanding and painting and she doesn't look too bad. Also glued up the Dual Radjet. Won't be ready in time for this season but man is she rigid. Found a chunk of carbon fiber arrow in my garage so will run the left motor's throttle and left aileron servo wires through this to the single RX in the right fuse. Not messing around with fuselage strength and rigidity. 4x1mm carbon strips running down the full length of the underside, on both sides anchored 2" deep into the wing roots, and up the bridge of the noses all permanently set with Gorilla Glue and meeting at the sharp ends. Weight gain is negligible, strength is orders of magnitude greater. Image Unavailable, Please Login
I'm not in the market for another single engine WWII plane but this Dauntless with dive brakes sure looks sweet esp for ~$200 [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zoQuqEd6-8c[/ame]
Those bananahobby videos are addictive. I want everything they review. No more narrow track ww2 fighters though(spitfire, 109, etc.) too hard to taxi/takeoff/land. Dauntless though should be OK. Not as sexy as a fighter, so probably not for me. When will someone come out with a nice foam p-39 or p-63? Tricycle landing gear and a nice fighter body. The reason I got the p-38 was for the tricycle gear, but I must say the two engines are more than I want. One's always pulling a little more than the other, which makes takeoff too exciting.
Kurt, is the DX8 backlit? I have to upgrade my DX6i as it's only have 10 models in the memory max and I constantly have to swap receivers. But I'd like a backlit LCD if possible, I think the DX7 doesn't either. The weather is amazing right now! Clear blue sunny skies moderately warm little wind. And I'm stuck indoors due to hayfever... still haven't maddened the 109 either.
Get an FMS 1400mm T-28? I just love the way the tricycle gear cycles in it, doors open up first then the gear slowly extends. Not a sleek bird like a Mustang or Spitfire but to me it is
Yes, and 30 model memory is nice, but if I had to do it over again I'd investigate Aurora/Futaba/JR radios more. I got a good deal on the DX8 for ~$260 new w/o RX but there's a bunch of little things about it I'm not crazy about (flimsy trim levers, programming ease, chunky form). If you haven't seen it Z8 goes into great detail. Supposedly the current version addresses the brown-out issues. http://z8rc.com/2011/04/hitec-aurora-9-vs-spektrum-dx8/ There's also do it yourself backlight kits if you want to go that way with your DX6: http://www.ebay.com/itm/LCD-Backlight-Turnigy-9x-flysky-imax-dx6i-dx7s-transmitter-spektrum-B-W-G-/280999825852?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&var=&hash=item416ce511bc Funny my V1 JPower Lightning (counter rotating motors) took off and tracked dead straight while my P-51 always wanted to veer to the left on takeoff even when very smoothly increasing throttle. But I think that was more to do with a mis-aligned gear strut since with the new alloy ones she takes off much straighter. I really like the challenge of taking off and landing a tail-dragger, but the P-51 is probably easier than a Spit or a 109. Off to the field in a few hours!
I like the gear arrangement on the t-28, and have flown a parkzone t-28, but I just don't love the body. Everybody has a different idea of what's attractive. Counter rotating V1 p-38? Mine aren't counter rotating, and I have a V1. Are you sure?
heh no argument from me I didn't buy the Trojan for it's looks It's a "throw in the car for a sunset fly at the local school yard" or a warm-up plane before taking up the higher-performance planes, and a darned good one. When the winds are 15mph+ it actually becomes more fun to fly All I did to make the Lightning CR was switch up one of the motor's wires and get new props, one pusher one tractor: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXVJ18 http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/WTI0001P?I=LXGYM7&P=8 Don't know how much of a difference it makes, and the MA props aren't exactly scale looking but they're tougher than stock and she did tracks (and loop) very straight. Great day at Bong field today. A bit windy (5g20) but 60F and sunny made it worthwhile. Put 4 battery packs through the Mustang, with at least 10 touch and goes and at least decent landings. After running a 3S battery through the Stinger jet made the leap to 4S. Whoa. Now T:W is over 1:1, she's a real screamer. Took some video I'll patch into a comp, not many pics here's one of the 'stang and one of a guy's 049 soarer. It ran at WOT for about 1 minute to gain as much altitude as possible, then he soared around for 5 minutes or so (winds weren't good today for thermals). Turns out the guy is the treasurer of the "Bong Eagles" club, and is actually the same one who met with the Governor in ~1990 and got us a paved runway for the field. Neat guy, keeps his Cessna 172 at East Troy airport outside of town, where his friend works on various warbirds including P-51s for customers. Definitely will go visit him over there some day! Oh, OK, didn't know you went to counter rotating. Did you try non-counter before switching? The master airscrew props look very rigid, so would worry about grass belly landings. The stock blades flex, for good or bad. I don't think my problem is the props, I think the ESC's aren't matched perfectly, so I get different throttle curves on each. In the air it flys perfect. Loops are straight. It's takeoff that's darty. I never figured out why people with a real airplane would go to an rc field?
I only had the stock props on for her first "flight", when then ailerons reversed and bent a motor shaft on the ensuing crash :/ Seem to remember it taxied and took off quite straight though. lol the guy actually said "I should be out flying my 172 today!" There are usually a good group of guys out at the RC field though so there is that social aspect of it. My wife informed that she wants to fly, so debating which plane would be good for her. A little more simulator time and this one should do nicely (throw rates tones down): http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=19988 I already have all the parts to put her in the air, plus with one of these I could also make use of it http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=22731
any of you guys fly the ducted elec fan foam jets ...... [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=64WAHSKrcas[/ame] about to pull the trigger on one of these
Yup I've got one EDF, the red Stinger in the posts above. It's loud, fast, smooth and gets my heart pumping but really sucks down the juice, only ~4 minutes flight time per 2700mAh 4S LiPo. A-10s are very cool (there are a number of them in various sizes and configs I'm not up on the differences) and not really meant to fly that fast so you should get relatively longer flight times. Although if (when ) I get another EDF it will likely be this SR71 http://www.bananahobby.com/sr-71-blackbird-v2-rc-edf-jet-arf-75517-prd1.html?pSearchQueryId=256757 [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-U3NOv9ny7A&feature=player_embedded[/ame] or an F15 http://www.bananahobby.com/f-15c-eagle-v2-rc-edf-jet-arf-75502-prd1.html Had a couple good flights today with the T-28 and P-51 at the local schoolyard, first time I've flown the Mustang there. Not as roomy as Bong field and pretty gusty, but good to get some stick time on a chilly but gorgeous day. The dual Radjet is smoothed out, primed and ready for paint. 3 metal gear servos and cooling scoops (carved out foam pieces leftover from my 1st P-38) fitted and wire routing almost finished. Total flying weight will be ~900g and CG is within 10mm of stock (single fuse) location on the first shot. Really liking how she's turning out. Reminds me of jets I used to draw in my gradeschool notebook instead of listening to the teacher... Might just get her in the air before the deep freeze hits. im going to buy a controller and a flight sim first .....thats what my buddy down the rc shop said was the best way to start
