I have heard of the airbox, this the 2nd picture I've seen in the last week or 2. Ugly but, I am sure, are effective.
The black things look like vacuum container but not sure.

I agree Peter. Those look like the vacuum canisters, which on my 5000QV are up in the front trunk area (passenger side, near the firewall).

The lines are going to butterfly valves located at the inlet of the air box.
When the engine is shut off the valves close to keep the air box sealed in attempts to keep blowing sands from entering the system. It is for the middle east where they get a phenomena called a Haboob, basically a giant sand storm.

Don't we all make a living off of other peoples money??

Of course when I was in the Marines and now I'm working for the Government I actually pay myself at some level because my pay is based on tax Revenue

There are pretenders here in this section to do nothing other than cause trouble. As everyone knows, they don't last long, and some of us are here to ensure that.

Vic, I have seen Diablos & Countachs from the Middle East. The ones I saw basically needed to be entirely dismantled & refurbished, and I'm not exaggerating.

That is pretty cool AIR4C_1! Our cars must be brothers!

    Your VIN is KLA12002 (1989)

    my VIN is GLA12002 (1986)

3 years difference. Pretty cool. :)

I forgot to add. That set-up is sort of like what was on my 1980 Maserati 4Porte. As you can see from this photo.

The way this system worked, was when you shut off the engine, it opened a solenoid valve that allowed vacuum to move to the (2) valves (gold colored) attached to the air box. That closed off the airbox. Then (2) little pumps (grey & blue in color) started up and pumped any residual gas fumes into the 2 big gold colored charcoal canisters (mounted on the drivers side wheel arch).

I think three of the five officially imported QV DD's to Australia also had them - helps with fuel smell when stationary as well...
