Most likely because of the performance clause Vettel doesn't have to move if Ferrari performance goes backwards next year so why would they admit Vettel is coming over if he doesn't
I predict the situation would be similar to Vettel and Webber. The elder (Alonso) would certainly b*tch for a season or two, but once clear who's #1, things would calm down. Neither Webber nor Alonso are ideal #2s, but they're manageable. The upside is that kind of #2 driver is very good for the WCC. Take your pick . And the older drivers know they're on their way out, so they can't get too cocky IMO. In animal parlance, the younger, stronger 'alpha male' will take over, sooner or later. And in case of Alonso, what better way to finish your career at Ferrari. Things change folks. He's treated like a diva now, but expecting that until he'd done in 2016 would be stupid. If Vettel becomes available, Ferrari needs to jump right in, even if it's before they want to. Even Ferrari knows opportunities don't wait until you're ready. We'll find out in a year . I'm sure Vettel is ready for a new challenge, especially if he wins more championships. That's the nature of top athletes .
Alonso would never stand for being a designated #2 but he might settle for a Jenson Button-esque end-of-career situation when the team claims both drivers are on equal status but everyone knows that Hamilton is the #1. Right now, though, Alonso is the best and who knows how long he can keep this form up?
Hamilton number 1, maybe at his new team, but he got his doors blown off last year by Jenson and in reality neither of the 2 Mac drivers have been sparkling this year.
I think Hamilton has had a really solid year, but has been unlucky with a number of things including incompetence on behalf of his team (which he will have to get used to now that he's moving to Mercedes). Button has sucked IMO.
Agreed the team has not helped but at the start of the year both drivers squandered a clear car advantage over the rest of the field. Hamilton has also made some bizzarre set up choices that have cost him e.g. Spa, Japan
