Porsches 78-79 U.S. brochure features a silver U.S. 930 with non-optioned sunroof and right side mirror. The U.S. version can be distinguished by the sugar scoop headlight bezels, large rear bumpers and red taillights. The photographs in the brochure may be of the same silver U.S. 3.3 liter car. Was it a U.S. 3.3 liter prototype or production 930? http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/pp269/carrlane/789301.jpg http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/pp269/carrlane/789303.jpg
Two blue ROW 930s were sold at the 2009 Techno Classica Motor Show ('77 3 liter 930 for 38,500 Euro and '78 3.3 liter for 48,500 Euro). The VIN is not listed for the '78 930 but it has the same early turbo badge as the '77 turbo carrera. http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/pp269/carrlane/blue930s1.jpg http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/pp269/carrlane/blue930s3.jpg http://www.madwhips.com/1978-porsche-911-turbo/ http://www.madwhips.com/1977-porsche-turbo/
Interesting observations.. I too have noticed the difference in size. However, my build date is 9/77 and the factory lid has the larger turbo script which I believe is the original. Conversely, I had purchased another script for use on my DP extended tail and upon comparison (due to this thread) it is the smaller script as discussed. It is Part # 930.559.3717.01 which some sources list incorrectly as being Black Turbo script for 930 USA models 1977 thru 1989 Of course you can use it on whatever year you want. However, this is part of the Turbo Carrera script (76-77) as previously noted. 78-79 & ROW thru 85 should show a part # of 930.559.317.00 86-89 911 Turbo, & 91-92 (964) should show part # 930.559.317.02 94 3.6 Turbo of course is a chrome script showing part # 965.559.221.00
Thanks onboost, Interesting the new OEM 317 01 badge is "black" but has the script for the later 3.3 liter 930s (see attached link)?? Hold on to your early 3 liter turbo badge as they may be NLA (even though the replacement OEM part # appears to be made by Porsche). http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/pp269/carrlane/930badgeoem.jpg
Porsche Year, 1985-1986, by Susann Miller, includes an article on the Porsche Museum of Japan/Matsuda Collection. The article has a photo of a 1980 930 with caption: "The 1980 930 Turbo was the last year it was imported into Japan. U.S., Canada and Japan all have very strict emissions control regulations. Now, many other countries including Germany, are following the same rules and all Porsches will meet these regulations, making the new 911 Turbo an all world car." According to Michael Cotton's 911 Turbo Book, there were 63, 1980 930's imported in Japan and the VINs were included in the ROW series. Here's a breakout for Japan's '76-80 930's: 1976 - 28 (included in ROW VINs) 1977 - 49 (included in ROW VINs) 1978 - 50 (9308709511 to 9308709561) 1979 - 22 (9309709511 to 9309709532) 1980 - 63 (included in ROW VINs) Japan's 1980 930's would still have been equipped with the 917-style front floating rotor brakes and from the photo in the book, were also equipped with a dual-tip exhaust. It would be interesting to find out what months Japan's 930's were made and what other updates were included (Nippondenso air conditioner compressor, front oiler cooler, mid-1980 sport seats, etc.). http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/pp269/carrlane/93080japan.jpg
The 911-911S-Carrera 1974-1977 Catalog shows a #13 "Carrera" logo in Illustration 810-00. There are four different part numbers for #13. Two of these numbers are titled as "adhesive film" (duck-tail underside?). Another is listed for the (one-piece?) "Carrera 3.0" (not a US import). The forth, P/N 911 559 317 01 is simply listed as for "Carrera (US only?). Note the similarity in the "Carrera" P/N 911 559 317 01 and P/N 930 559 317 01 used for the #12 "turbo" logo shown in Illustration 810-00 in the 911 Turbo 1975-1977 USA Catalog. The only differences are the preceding 911 or 930 numbers. It looks like all of the early US 2.7 Carreras as well as the 3.0 Turbo Carreras used the same Carrera script logo. It would also seem logical that Porsche would have intended that all US 3.0 930s use the P/N 930 559 317 01 turbo script based on the above P/N similarities. Why is the 3.3 930 logo P/N 930 559 317 00 a lower number than the earlier 3.0 number? Onboost, are you saying you also have the thin crosslet t logo (P/N 930 559 317 00)? If that is true, than your early-78, my mid-79 and idarts late-79 all have the same script, meaning that probably all 78-79 930s have the same thin crosslet t script. Idart, based on your link, http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/pp269/carrlane/930badgeoem.jpg, are you saying that when you now order P/N 930 559 317 01 (should be thick crosslet t) that it now looks like P/N 930 559 317 00 (thin crosslet t)? Pelican shows all three 930 turbo scripts available (P/Ns 930 559 317 00, 01, and 03) as well as P/N 911 559 317 01, Carrera script.
Yes, part 930 559 317 01 ('Turbo' Black Script, 1976-1977) has the correct color (darker black) but has the later 3.3 liter turbo script. The part I have is a Porsche AG part dated 2008 (ordered from Pelican). Perhaps there are other turbo badges (earlier dates?) stocked at other places with the correct turbo script? I'm not sure why the earlier P/N 317 00 is for the '78-88, 3.3 liter cars. If onboost's '78 badge is original, then the U.S. silver 3.3 liter car in the Porsche brochure is likely a prototype with an earlier turbo script (never put into production). There must be more early '78 survivors out there somewhere for verification? It would be nice to know the VIN the blue '78 I previously posted with the early turbo script.
Interesting preliminary results on onboost's yours and my original cars having P/N 317 00 for our '78-79, 3.3 liter cars. Unless an owner confirms the badge is original, TO THE CAR, it may be hard to figure out some situations of badge differences. I think I can say from previous research that Porsche used a FIFO pull system for the most part. The real problem comes from discerning the originals from the replacements. These are 35 year old cars and the badge is only held on by 2 nuts so it is easily replaced, by owner, dealer, body shop. Or, they simply could be out-of-sequence assembly pulls at the factory. I think with a few more cars (along with their VINs) it can be confirmed what the early 3.3 liter cars used. Thanks again for your interesting pics and posts!
U.S. ’78-79 930’s were equipped with a Porsche CR Blaupunkt stereo radio and Hirschmann power antenna. For the 911 SC, the CR radio, rear speakers and power antenna were options ($500, $185 and $140 respectively). U.S. 930 Blaupunkt CR radios were specifically made with an FM frequency range to 108 MHZ. During mid-‘79, the radio knobs were updated with an embossed round pattern in the center. http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/pp269/carrlane/930radios.jpg The ROW ‘80 brochure features a '79 930 (early dash A/C vents) with radio delete. Even though the radio was deleted, the power antenna is still present but it is unknown if the rear speakers were also deleted. http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/pp269/carrlane/930radiodelete.jpg
Charles, not sure but maybe around VIN 500 as Ive seen the updated knobs on a 79, VIN 524 made in 4/79. Even if 524 has a replacement radio, I still believe the update occurred before the start of the U.S., 1980, A-Series 930s, produced from Aug-Nov 79 (VINs 817-1200).
hey you guys, amazing job on contributing to this thread, so sorry I have been up to my neck in activities that prevent me from enjoying my car world as much as I would like. I do want to jump in and give you guys something to work with as I have been prepping my car for resale, I just went through the box with the 'original' radio/stereo and took some photos. I've included a photo of my vin plate, so you guys can work your magic and see if this info gives you any conclusive findings, thanks again here is a photo of stereo, needs to be wiped down, just dusty, and the knobs, AND importantly, I think I am missing the piece that goes under the knob, the 'adjustment' piece? In the photo you can see one, I am missing the other one, Charles can you help, do you have a unit for parts and have a spare?????
