Sad news! I hope more information becomes publicly available.

    BUT.....
IMHO a car like that in the hands of an 18-year-old male isn't a wise choice. I personally wouldn't do that.

Also, reading the names of Indian descent, hits a little bit closer to home for me. Lots of us have piles of money, but we choose to buy our kids Mercedes-Benz cars or BMW's. Unfortunate.......

I don't like this. Not one bit.
Edit: I'm not trying to turn the thread into a discussion on what car to buy for your kids. That's your business.

Very sad news indeed. I hope they recover ok.
As far as getting an 18 year old that car, it's the parents choice, but I see it more of an experience thing than an age thing. A ~500 HP car in the hands of someone who didn't go through a vehicle with 150, 250, 350, 450 hp prior to that one can always be dangerous. The newer cars have a lot of electronics that fix human error, and can make you feel invincible. However, physics will always be physics. If you go beyond the laws of physics, no amount of electronic intervention will save you. Like I said, buying a car like that for your kid is a personal choice, and I'm not going to fault the parent...I'm sure they are suffering enough right now. This could have happened in a Honda Civic, and it does, almost every day. But, I would definitely invest in a high performance driving school for my kid before getting a high HP machine for them. As a matter of fact, I think it's a good idea for EVERY driver to go through one of these schools, no matter what they drive. It's expensive, but it can definitely save you, or your car. I want to put my kids through a high performance driving school once they get their drivers license. My oldest has her permit now, so I may put her through a school next year.

What a stupid idea, give your just licensed 18 year old son a high performance sports car. just stupid.

I hope they both recover, in all ways possible and I'm glad that no one else was hurt by this fathers stupidity!

I would have been dead at 18 if my dad had given me a 500hp exotic, as would most 18 year old boys.

My kids that drive (2 of 4) scare me sometimes when they take the Nissan Versa we bought for them to use.

Hope the boys recover and dad gives a bit more thought to his actions going forward.

I know everyone in this world is different and there are always different circumstances, however, I feel that no child/kid/teen should be given a car this powerful until they are much older and more mature.

I had a beat up old suv when I was 16, and I was still a complete idiot. I did things to this day that I still shake my head at. I wasn't wild, was very safe, didn't do the typical kid things like drink and drive, couldn't text and drive, etc... but man, was I lucky that nothign bad ever happened to me. I firmly just believe there is a maturity, understanding, and respect for life and safety that only comes at a latter age.

Still to this day, as a grown man, I catch myself pushing things too much with my F and other cars. If I had a son or daughter, I might take them out and let them drive the car with me as the passenger... but NEVER on their own or with friends.... just too dangerous and risky.

Everyone always wants to push it and have fun, I just see that most teens cannot recognize the possible severity of their actions.

Too bad for these 2, I hope they have a full recovery.

I agree with what someone said. Progression of hp is important. Going straight to 500 HP is lethal for driver and others.

That was a really nice 'gift' for the kid, but not a responsible choice IMHO. My first car had 300 HP! But it was a used BMW 750iL V-12, so it was a friggin tank. A big responsibility at that age, however, I never acted irresponsibly with it because I knew my parents would take it away. I drove that car through everything, and I never wrecked. Learned a huge amount from driving it. Still wish I had it.

Hope they recover, but in honesty their lives have likely been altered forever.

When I was much younger -- in fact 17 -- my dad bought me a Corvette. I never crashed it but I came close. In retrospect I realize it was a bad idea. My dad thought I was mature enough and responsible enough, and a good enough driver, to be able to deal with it. But I really wasn't. He wanted to be a good father, as I am sure the father of this injured kid also did. I feel for the regret and guilt that he must be going through now.

Me too. My dad was smart enough to keep me in low powered junks.

As it was, I got pretty adept at hanging the tail out on my '61 Chevy station wagon with a 6 banger.

True my dad bought me a e30 m3 back when I was in high school... Coolest kid in the school ;) but i was a pretty responsible kid and i still managed to get into trouble and had a couple of close calls that could have been catastrophic... And that car was only 200 hp now try a 500 hp car that was about the same amount!!!! I am sure he was just trying to be a good father and probably trying to reward his son for being a good kid and he could have been a great kid and just been bad luck!!! But I do know we get slightly more responsible the older we get... This is a tragedy and I hope some good comes of this!

That's not really a good way to show how much you love your kids.
You put them in a dangerous situation or enable one potential danger for them.

What a shame. With the extent of the burn injuries described those kids are gojng to have a long painful road to recovery. I really hope tgey wont have any severe disfigurement to deal with.

My kids hated the Ford Escape we got for them...my son still managed to get cited for going 79 in a 20 mph zone. He's a good kid but at 18 the senses of responsibility, fear and mortality are just not there.

If it truly is 80% burned, unlikely he will survive...

Sad to see. My kids will get what I got, a used Honda Civic.

Very sad... hope they are able to recover fully. Also coming from a desi family, my first car was an Accord. My dad let me take his 300ZX for the last day of school when I was 16 and it was way too much car for me (222 HP 1990) but I luckily did not get into any trouble. Can't imagine driving a beast like the 430 at such a young age.

Quite unbelievable that the occupants didn't die instantly, the damage to the car is super extensive.

I agree with the comments of the greater community that 18 year olds should never be allowed to own/drive these vehicles.

In fact, if they don't survive, there may be some culpability on the parents parts for making such a poor decision...

"...On a Ferrari forum, one reader posted that judging from Fox 5 News' pictures of the wheels holding together the crumpled frame, the model was a F430 Scuderia which in 2009 cost at base price, $283,000..."

whoever it is better not be from this forum; can't even distinguish a regular 430 from a scud or a vantage from a Bentley.
