Looks like a Amalgam Modell with an "RL" lable for a lot of dollars more than the normal Almagam version... But anway, these modells are really great!
I have all of these in stock for WAAAAAAY less...check them all out here: http://www.collectorstudio.com/index.cfm/ID/16 Morry
These were on display in the Ralph Lauren store at the recent Americana show. I'm not a scale model expert, but the quality seems good, and certainly expensive. 250 TR pieces http://www.flickr.com/photos/photosbyjohnwiley/8093669834/in/set-72157631786520325/ 250 GTO pieces http://www.flickr.com/photos/photosbyjohnwiley/8093697934/in/set-72157631786520325/ completed Bugatti T57 SC Atlantic http://www.flickr.com/photos/photosbyjohnwiley/8093785353/in/set-72157631786520325 Jaguar D-type http://www.flickr.com/photos/photosbyjohnwiley/8093473850/in/set-72157631786520325/
I've got the Bugatti and Ferraris in scale 1/18 by CMC for about $300, each! These models have opening doors, hoods and bonnets and lots of details! Are these RL models sealed? If so they are waaaay overpriced!
Poor Ralph, he must be tight up for cash, I wonder if he will be selling 1/8th models of other things in the house as well ? Based on assembly time, material cost, transportation/warehousing and profit, I figure each " model maker" is getting less than $4.00 an hour. Less than minimum wage in my state, they could very well be made in china. One thing I noticed in the article: It says each sports a unique edition number ( God I hope so, or nobody would know if they had copy number 1, or copy number 2389) and a certificate.
Guys here are the facts: These large models are stunning. I sell dozens of them each month at around $5000-$7000 a piece. The RL stores sell some of the very same ones I have for a lot more - $9500 each. Regardless they are selling many! Marketing is key and they are (for the most part) not selling these to model collectors or 'car guys', but to style savvy clients as artwork. I am selling them to well heeled vintage/exotic car owners and enthusiasts mostly. Some of the ones I sell also go to hobbyists and model makers who appreciate the size and detail as well. A good chunk have gone to FChatters! In terms of comparing them to other models, there are better ones in the 'bang for the buck' category. I sell a ton of CMC models - they are fantastic and you simply can't beat them for the money. But they are 1/18, mass produced, the range is limited, and they are made in China. These are large 1/8 scale versions of cars that have mostly not been modelled by many other companies in any decent large scale, and many of them are bespoke. Keep in mind we are all on a Ferrari forum - by nature everyone on this site covets a car that is fantastic but not necessarily 'sensible'. A Nissan GT-R will outperform most Ferraris and other expensive exotics for a fraction of the price. A Seiko will keep just as good time as a Patek. Not everything can be dissected in terms of performance/value. I feel these large models do represent a good value, but are not in most people's budgets, as are most Ferraris. That being said we all buy what we feel is sensible to us. But it's nice to have the choice, isn't it?
Yeah, I'll back up Morry here and say, the 1/8 Amalgam models are nothing short of amazing. They have a real presence. CMC make nice models but cars in 1:18 and even 1:12 scale have nothing on these models. Now whether one would want to buy the RL versions, that's another story. -F
does anybody have any pics of how rl proposes you display these models in your house? i have a lot of models and my wife has banned them to my study only and then only on the top shelf of my book case but if i could show her a classy rl example maybe i could change her mind
1/8 scale is BIG. Almost too big for a normal sized or smallish house. They are supersized and fit best in supersized houses, er, mansions. Pick your battles. The models might be banished to the study but at least the garage is filled with some good stuff. -F
my models are all 1:18. 1:8 does in fact need its own space, and i cannot dedicate that much space to cars in the house given how many are in the garage already.
You can buy hundreds of 1/18s or buy a few dozen 1/8s. In the end thousands are spent differently. Kind of like buying a WG Rolex Daytona and an A-P Royal Oak versus a dozen of other nice, but not as expensive watches. In terms of room, the footprint of a 1/8 without a case is about the same as just 3x 1/18 models displayed on an angle. With a case, a 1/8 takes up about the same room as 4x 1/18 models. So the space is not a huge issue. These cases typically fit an average bookshelf. With buying 1/8 cars, you stick to absolute favorites, whereas with 1/18s people typically buy anything they like. I offer all scales and admire most of the ones that are done to an exceptional level. CMC are fantastic. That full scale Lancia D50 is incredible! I have that car in 1/4 scale http://www.collectorstudio.com/index.cfm/ID/16 Morry Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Ross, we´ve got to talk, it´s time you build a new house!! Hand me over the project and i promise you a generous space for you models!!!!
+1 if you need a carpenter for build-in display cases, LMK i'm sure the ralph lauren name alone will help in sales, another item for the neiman-marcus catalog i suppose
guys, if i lived in the usa, i might just hire you. but as it is, i live in geneva at the moment in a rented crumbling monster, so no chance.
This is reality, thank you. RL stores can get away with silly pricing, because most of their clientele are not car people, are not on sites like FCHat. At least here we are lucky enough to have sponsors like the Collector's Studio to save us some money. That Bugatti is nice, I got to see the real car in Paris at the Louvre last year. Too bad I am not collecting anything anymore. BTW, I bought a watch at the Dollar Store for $5, and it keep better time, and is more reliable than my Raymond Weil, which I have now retired. Maybe not as glossy, but still, if I get robbed who cares!
