Whats the best out there now? I've gotten away from photography lately and I just don't see the need to have the gear I do and I'd rather sell it now than let the body depreciate more. I'm looking for quality first of all, need a wide lens on it, good colors. Low light performance isn't as big of a deal. RAW is a must but I figure they all have that.

*I realize I've criticized these cameras in the past, but I've started to come around based on the quality I've been seeing.

while not exactly "micro", the sony nex-7 will give you the best bang for the buck.

I think I may be leaning toward the Nikon J1, that 10mm pancake is tempting. Anyone have one?

10mm pancake is a 27mm equivalent = not wide and standard focal length kit lens for the others.

I'd go Olympus EM-5, better selection of lenses available than nex and the rest and a bit better than NEX in IQ at low ISO, same price as NEX 7 but a bit more than your $1k budget at $1300 which is a match for nex7 ..

I'm impressed, though looking at the comparison I had no idea the G1X had such a large sensor. I do like the compactness of the Sony though.

I haven't paid any attention to anything but DSLRs and I'm really blown away by the IQ these things are putting out.

    i agree.
all else being equal, sensor size is the most important factor in choosing a digital camera.

Agreed, but I also think you can offset some that on the compactness. Being able to put that Sony in my pocket vs 4/3rds with the lens sticking out adds a lot of value, at least for me. If I have to carry something with lens and all I might as well just have kept my DSLR.

That one may get some serious consideration, though I'm not paying $650 for it, maybe when I can pick one up used or find a good deal on one.

as far as compactness to picture quality ratio is concerned...
    I love this set up..

Panasonic GX1 with olympus 12mm 2.0 lens...I can still squeeze it in my pocket, and its 18mp sensor does a great all round job.

Heres my next size up in compact..cannot fit in pocket but not so big as to be a bummer to carry...

    Panasonic GH2 with Leica 25mm 1.4

Both really fun top quality set ups...
Movies with this set up are Broadcast quality

If I were to do it again now...surely Sony NEX 7 with 25mm 2.0 zeiss lens

it is 2x and there is a m4/3rds 25mm version of that lens that is a match for perfomance while shedding size and weight...

The RX100 sure seems hard to beat though. Rated at better image quality (despite the smaller sensor) and it's much more compact. The problem I have with the four thirds is for the majority of lenses the package is big enough that I might as well still be carrying around a DSLR.

100% OF CAMPACT interchangeable lens cameras come with a disposable lens...meaning if you look at the price dif between the body only and the stock lens included , its usually $100.00 to $150.00 more..
    what does that say...

It says its a whole new ball game if you add a quality lens in the mix..

The Olympus lens that I have on the GX1 is a game changer..

A fixed lens camera will Never compare..

I was in Best Buy this weekend..handled the RX100..actually quite nice small package..
at 20 MP it should be a winner..A bit $$$$$ much for what it is though..
Then I got the new What Digital camera mag....and I see there is an RX1 on the way..
24 mp full size sensor in similar size RX100 body...
