    What's the rules on this?

IIRC as long as the FIA have 1 liter of fuel to take as a sample it should be fine, no?

    Not necessarily:

If Vettel goes to the end of the grid Mark can probably help him more by staying out in front robbing points from Alonso.

Alternatively he could try to slice a tire on the Ferrari...

IF Vettel has sufficient fuel on board to take the sample, could he be in the clear? I'm spitting through the technical regulations atm

OK. So, the question becomes is it the availability of the fuel, or making it back that's the key?

A little surprised we haven't seen a ruling yet.

"Force majeure" would seem to be the key..... Does running out of gas constitute FM?......

Only the FIA could possibly construct a rule where running out of gas would be considered FM in a rule that mentions having to make it back to the pits under your own power.

On German motorsportmagazin.com they say that Vettel was ordered by Renault to stop the car immediately. So probably an engine problem for RBR. No further details yet.

The lack of fuel is just an investigative / validation process in parc ferme which would confirm or debunk a team's claim that it was a mechanical failure that prevented the car from returning to the pits on it's own power.

    +1 :) Agreed.....

Seems pretty clear cut that he should be heading backwards to me..... OTOH, this is indeed the FIA we're talking about.... Why no ruling yet?

    Cheers,
    Ian

If that nut job takes out any WDC contenders he will get a race ban IMO, in fact that applies to any driver he takes out.
