2008- He won once in fluky, sopping wet conditions. Didn't win title.

2009- Had the best car from the midway point of the year on. The RB5 had the most fastest laps of any constructor, even Brawn. Didn't win title.

2010- Lost tons of points through stupid mistakes and barely won the title in far and away the best car.

2011- Won the title in one of the most dominant cars in F1 history. Smoked everyone.

2012- Leading the title with a car that is quite obviously the class of the field.

Vettel has never done anything close to what Schumacher did (taking the title to the last race in cars that were far inferior to their competition - 1997/1998).

He's had the best car for most of his career and has yet to prove he can win (shall I say consistently) in a car that isn't the fastest. Throughout the course of F1 history there have been many instances where guys will get an odd win here and there in a car that isn't that great.

Senna had God. That's thinking of a higher order.

And quite a few of those MS wins were due to failures of the faster cars, not driving. And the RB wasnt fastest this year till the last few races. And in Abu Daubi were NOT the fastest again.

The RB8 has been the fastest car at Bahrain, Monaco, Europe, Britain, Japan, Korea, India and Abu Dhabi. 8 races out of 18 held so far, which is 44%. In a season with so much variation, having the fastest car for that much is HUGE. They'll likely have the fastest car the last 2 races too.

Overall clearly the fastest team. Qualified 2nd and 3rd and recorded fastest lap in the race.

?, Vettel won in a Torro Rosso ...

And finally we are about to see if LH has really got it, especially if the 2013 Mercedes is average.

Now let's get back on topic: AS v. JMF for the best F1 driver ever in the BBC's opinion. Due to hurricane Sandy I had no cable TV so I watched the Senna movie on DVD yet again. I'm thinking that the BBC will give JMF the # 1 spot due to Senna v. Prost 1990, when Senna later admitted that he purposefully took out Prost in Japan. JMF never had to resort to shady tactics and was able to control the "red mist" far better than Senna. True JMF had the best car but the same can be said of Senna and McLaren. Thoughts?

BTW-please keep it limited to AS v. JMF; I too think Clark may have been the greatest had he lived but I want to hear your opinions on AS v. JMF. We can talk about Rosberg v. Hamilton v. Vettel etc after the season is over....thx.

Win a title. Or at least come close.

Let's face it, Vettel has had the best car every year he has been competitive in the championship.

I think Senna will get it because ever since that movie came out everyone has been drunk on him. Either one would be deserving, though.

I've been drunk on Senna since I started following F1, in fact seeing him race was what got me into F1 while everyone else in my circle was drunk on Jordan and the NBA...

Lol, well he is certainly a great driver (all of that "he can't pass" stuff was rubbish) and it's not his fault he has had Newey designing his rides but we've yet to see if he's capable of something like Alonso has done this year or Schumi did in the past.

It´s really hard for me because i never saw Ascari oe Fangio....Ascari did something amazing in 52..he entered 6 races and he won every single one of them!!!And made pole and fastest lap in 5 of them!!!k, his Ferrari was the best machine but Farina, taruffi had the same car and were left with scaraps...53, 5 victories in 7 races, another 5 poles and 4 fastest laps...and let´s not forget, the acr in wich fangi won for Ferrari, was going to be Ascari car if he had not been killed, so it´s likely that he would have won the 56 title also. As for Fangio, his amazing race in the Nurburgring it´s the stuff of legend, i don´t recall anyrhing similar by Ascari.....so i really don´t know....Moss, said there wasn´t much between them, he sais maybe fangio was a whisker better, because he would drive like a clock, never missing the trajectory on a turn...but we all know Moss had a particular admiration and a great friendship with fangio...and jenks has no doubts in his mind that Ascari was better....what can i say?
Now if we talk between more moder drivers, i would have no doubt puting Gilles above all others, because i saw tem all race, and i never ever saw anyone get close to the talent Gilles had...nor Senna, nor Shumacher, not even close.

WEll, far better Massa than the other 2!!! But anyway, the all classification is so bad that it really doesn´t matter who they put first...after all, Senna always drove for english teams so he was already far ahead.....just can´t understand why they chose him over Clark (i mean Clark was clearly better IMO)....ok, Clark was from scotland!!!
