How To Prove Limited Numbers Made To DMV

    Hi everyone,

    Not to open a can or worms here, but the new application for Collector Car status (in NJ) asks for a letter to prove that your car was manufactured in limited numbers.

    Question: Have you successfully provided a DMV with such document in the past and which source did you get it from? Dealership, Car Club, Collector Car Insurance Cover Page, Book, Wiki?

    A common source for Ferrari production numbers is the back of Cavallino Magazine.

    Will they accept a photocopy of those magazine pages as "proof"?

    what does limited numbers have to do with collector cars... there are countless domestic cars that have become collecter cars with normal volume production... a collector car is more date centered than volume produced, are they referring to the numbering of cars before the mandated uniform vin system was initiated... even cars produced in volume after that system was in place have become collecctor cars... ask the DMV what they are looking for... usually for serial numbers not conforming to the vin system is handled by an affadavit that the car was produced before that time and a visual inspection by a designated inspector ( usually a police officer )

    What's a limited number? They sold like 4000 Subaru WRX's. Is that limited?

    Found the info on the NJ DMV website.

    One of the benefits of this designation is the car is exempt from inspections.

    So, a simple letter from your local FCA region (e.g. Penn-Jersey club - http://fcapennjersey.com/) should do it.
    Most of the Regions have their own letterhead, so have them write a one-page letter stating your year and model, how many made (best data available - from Cavallino magazine for example), and the fact that it is considered a "limited production" car (key words for the DMV).

    toggie, good extra efffort, most of us ( me ) are too lazy to dig deeper

    interesting designation, "collector car", circumvents the annual emission / safety inspections... applies to newer cars only... the first post led me to think it was some sort of misguided beuracratic hoop to jump through, where in reality it grants some relief from over regulation... it's nice to live ( register cars ) in rural areas that are exempt from layers of inspections

    I had a Porsche 71 911S and after 25 years old you can classify it as a historic vehicle. I have a 89 Porsche turbo and in a few years I will classify also as a historic vehicle. It is a limited production car with only 600 produced. The only benefit you receive now is no state inspection required. Meanwhile the only thing NJ checks now for inspection is smog according to the year manufactured. Obviously they added a collector car category and what is the benefit, no inspection not a big deal. Unless you have modified your car and it will not pass inspection I would not worry about it

    They made ~35,000 WRXs in 2002 alone (I had one), and there are even more than 4000 STis running around, so perhaps you mean one of the special editions? (STi Spec C Type RA, for example, from which I got the vf34 turbo for my heavily modified car)... sorry to correct his honor, the mayor, but they're not nearly that rare.

    Cavallino does not break early 308s by year though, to yield an even SMALLER number you can use annual production..

    75-'76 were glass, between 712 and 915

    '77 steel would be about the same...less than 1000

    '78 -'79 catalyzed would be about the same.....

    A letter on company or club letterhead should do it.

    Even then, it apparently has to get reviewed by some committee in Trenton and be accepted before you can actually get it registered.

    I was considering doing this for my 2008 Cayman S Sport limited edition (1 of 700), but decided it was easier to just run it through inspection and be done with it.
