    That's interesting, I thought that the series 1 cars had the more streamlined mirror(s) of the series 2 and 412 series.

    These are the pictures in my 412 book by Paolo Murani and Stefano Pasini of a 1978 400 and a 1979 400i respectively. Note that neither car has a passenger side mirror. I don't know if passenger side mirrors were special order or added as standard after some point in time.

    Well now isn't some of this interesting.

    First I'm pretty certain I'm correct about series 1 vs series 2 mirrors John. My black 400i had the larger mirrors. You can actually see out of them.
    Here is #42181 with the larger series 1 mirrors and a series 1 grill. Then here is #43123 with the more streamlined mirrors and a series 2 grill. I believe the cutoff is somewhere in between.

    Now on to the no right hand mirror. That one has me stumped. I've never seen that before. The mirror switch is a 2 mirror switch and the parts books shows only one mirror switch. Very odd.

    Just an update to say that it looks like it did not sell last year and is now on Ebay with a Buy it now of $32000 USD or Best Offer:

    The car is back on Ebay and this time it looks like it will sell, as there is no reserve and the current price is $23000.00 USD ... although I do not understand the sentence " For Sale within California to a Dealer only"... Does anyone know why someone would state this? Emission issues?

    If you look at the CA smog check web site (Vehicle Test History), you can see that it failed smog on 7/3 and 4 days ago on 8/19. So I'd say you're right on the money.

    Actually I don't think he is limiting it only to CA, just that if someone in California buys it he has to be a dealer.

    Problems with passing CA emissions are the difficulty here.

    For us Brits it's hard to understand all of the rules and regs that the US imposes state by state.

    Currently over here we simply have to take the car for a Minisry of Transport (MoT) test. This checks all the major mechanical components, brakes, lights etc and for modern cars the emissions as well. Cars made before 1990 don't require emission testing (I believe I'm correct on this but may have the year wrong) and cars made before 1960 are now exempt from the test totally.

    I'm sure that this will change in the future but at the moment it's all pretty straightforward.

    Watching the problems that you good people encounter I'm glad I'm here.

    Well I'm not sure I can pinpoint the exact wood but I know it isn't teak since it doesn't react to sunlight like teak does and walnut is out since it is to light. Perhaps something from the Maple family, but likely a native Italian wood.

    Mike Sheehan had this listed last October for $25k. Seemed like a decent car. Sheehan's site under the sold section has a nice little abbreviated history of the car.
