Boeing Display

I thought that I would share some pictures with you of the prints that Boeing asked me to display in their executive suite in Everett. Okay, I fouled up the process of down loading, uploading, and off loading the pictures so i'll load everything up again. This time I won't be called in for dinner.

I meant to mention that all but one of the prints were 3 X 4 feet, one of the DC-1 landing at Newark was 5 X 6 feet. The display does grab the eye when you enter the spaces.

Thanks, Lou. It's hard work to cover up all those little numbers with the right color. It was a surprise that they chose most paintings that were done early in my foray into the art business ( which ain't much business, really).

 

Thanks. I'm not very good at math so maybe I'm not figuring it out correctly. All I know is that I was born in 1926, the same year as that Ryan M-1.

 

The 787 and 747-8 are in the near future and I have a sketch completed of the PAA 377.

 

Thanks, Don. I had an interesting afternoon explaining and talking about the paintings and anecdotes associated with them. The oddest thing about the selection of the paintings, you'll notice that only one is Boeing, is that my portfolio was circulated among the office administrators (secretaries) and they made the choices. " We are the ones who will be looking at them all day and we want them to be nice." Of course, the execs approved and that is how Curtiss, Ryan, and Douglas airplanes showed up. One of the big cheeses did make a statement that the choices displayed the history of commercial aviation from the Jenny that carried the first U.S. Airmail in 1918 to the Douglas DC series. Speaking of the Douglas DC's was a humorous incident of an old friend who was a co-pilot on a DC-2. The cabin heat was provided by a steam heater behind the lav and one day it quit. So, John was told to go back and find out what how to start again. After getting it going again he opened the little door in the bulkhead and his leg was promptly trapped when a woman in the restroom slammed the door shut and held him there. After a long period of his absence, the pilot asked someone to retrieve his co-pilot and he was eventually rescued from what he described as an Amazon with a threatening attitude.

 

I guess it has been my life since I was a weeny kid in 1930. Our mom loved airplanes and steam locomotives and she would drag us kids to the old Hoover Field in Washington, D.C. and then on the way home she would stop by the yards at Union Station to watch the locomotives. As soon as I could break loose at 10 or 11 years old I was a little airport bum and begged rides in whatever was available. Not always a good experience because some of the pilots and airplanes( Waco 9's and 10's) were not what one would consider first class. I recall on one flight getting unhappy because I couldn't see anything because of the hot water and oil spraying back in my goggle-less face. I was too small to be tightly secured by the old leather set belts and too many times I felt ice cold air on my butt when some kind of maneuver was attempted. We are talking about 1936-37 and some older airplanes. In 1939 I was befriended by a crop duster pilot who gave me the best of everything, fatherly guidance, generosity, and some great flying experiences. A great guy, lost during the war. I still like steam locomotives and my son and I trade the interest in them.

Thank you. The Hobbit and the 777-300 are two of my favorites. Nice to see them put together. Working on the 777-300 configuration was my last job at Boeing before I retired. Good memories.
