If everybody is making retarded decisions, maybe it means that it´s not so easy as it looks from an armchair.

Re: Massa, I´m not his biggest fan, but I have to admit that the options available at this point were not specially interesting or proven. I suppose that the decision of extending his contract for only one more year means that they´re waiting for someone else being available.

I think you´re overestimating this. John Surtees said that they only could improove the F1 car after Le Mans in June because their resources were focused in sports cars.

And from the early 80s on, when the big car manufacturers entered and the garagistes had tobacco and arab money, Ferrari quite often has been punching above their weight.

It's not that I think I'm smarter than these guys in general. It's more like everywhere else in business/life: Sometime people make decisions that are so obviously wrong, you can't help but wonder.

LdM's approach of "going Italian" is such a decision. Keeping Massa after his crash is another.

I can go with that, but maybe in fear of upsetting the equilibrium with Alonso, (being the delicate flower he is) they have stuck with Massa, and maybe the Todt connection has a bearing on it.

So you could argue it is the right decision.

Notice how I said "after his crash". I meant that quite literally.

    Ferrari being Ferrari.

Frustrating, but if they weren't they'd be some other modern androgyne team.
Like that beloved uncle who still makes you rather uncomfortable on occasion.

Truer words have never been spoken!

Unless you've sat on the wall during a race you really have no idea what the pressure is like. They don't make "retarded" decisions they (occasionally) make mistakes, pure and simple. It's very easy to rewind the DVR, think about what happened and second guess 'em. Not so easy to do in the heat of the moment.

Calling any of them retarded I find a little insulting.

    Cheers,
    Ian

    Reading comprehension?

I didn't say anything about decisions made on the pitwall.

Is there any context, other than ignition timing, that the phrase is appropriate?

    :)

I don't get this attitude where F1 teams are without fault and all their decisions are always beyond scrutiny and correct.

Each year there is at least one case in the business world where one has to wonder "What were they thinking?" (this year Facebook gets that award for the worst managed IPO). So to me it comes as no surprise that F1 teams/managers make blunders too. They're part of the business world too, just a more public one where mistakes are more visible and tangible.

Heck, even the super clever Bernie has some lead balloons of ideas once in a while (Olympic medals instead of points).

    who said that ?

I think the more you participate in motorsport the more you realise how hard it is to win something and how much luck you need to get it all right.

Having the best car is a huge benefit but not the all consuming factor of a winning series

The teams are looking at data you don't see, in real time.
You're watching the results of their decisions.

When a car leaves the pits with the fuel hose attached its fairly obvious that someone screwed the pooch.

    LOL

And once again: I'm talking about decisions made in the boardroom not the pitwall.

If Ferrari doesn't win the WDC (and WCC) this year it is because of strategic decisions made last year and before.

I remenber williams in Damon's years..they where a total disgrace (wich was ok, because the driver sucked as well)...i still remenber when having made pole, they decided to make a 2 top strategy for Hill in Monaco!!!!! I couldn´t belive it and laughed my ass off....i mean, there are mistakes and dumb decisions!!!

THAT is a perfect example of a dumb move. There was zero reason for them to do that. Since they were on the pole already, all they needed to do was apply the same strategy as the rest of the field, yet they didn't.

Without all the facts, being so categorical about these things is a bit risky. Maybe they only got pole thanks to an agressive set up but had a problem with tyre degradation, who knows. I remember something about Patrick Head saying that as Hill got nervous when Schumacher was right behind him, they chose different strategies than Schumacher to make sure that Hill could ran away in the start, even if it meant that he had to pit earlier or more often. Hill was quite good when he was running alone.

But apart from that, yes, Williams was not that good back then, Benetton wiped the floor with them in 94 and 95.
