Hello gun owners. Is a .223REM same or interchangeable with a 5.56x45NATO? It is for an FN FS2000 and a friend's AR-15. Thank you.

    Ron,

I think you can fire any .223 in a 5.56 chambered gun, but, depending on the type of 5.56, you may have a problem firing it in a .223 because of excess pressure.

Mike, thank you. I have been doing some reading and looks like the bottomline is what you just said. Looks like the 5.56 is the military and 223 the sport version.

    Thanks a lot!

Is it for play...or for the "when the ballon goes up" scenario?

    Read this: http://www.luckygunner.com/labs/5-56-vs-223/

The FS2000 should be GTG w/ either .223 or 5.56NATO. As far as the AR, it depends on how manufactured the barrel. Even if the barrel has 5.56 stamped on it, the chamber may not be reamed correctly for 5.56 and this sometimes happens to low-end ARs.

From our very own Ammoman's website -

"While the 5.56x45 and the .223 are interchangeable, the 5.56 is a military round that runs at higher pressures than its .223 counterpart".

Just ordered one, too. Same as yours (black). My first venture with a rifle. Can't wait...

If you ever come across a batch of ammo you're not sure, .223 is stamped at the end of the brass as ".223 REM"

5.56 is usually marked "5.56" or has this "(+)" looking symbol stamped on the brass.

Personally I would stay away from the Russian stuff.
    Very dirty.

    Check

    www.ammoseek.com

May as well get a thousand rounds or more.
Obama has his eye on us.

    FN builds a fine rifle.
Should be able to consume anything pressure wise.

I have generally avoided Russian stuff although I've tried them in my Beretta 92FS and Ruger LC9. These are my PDWs and want to make sure they eat everything.

The only gun I consistently use Russian ammo is my Polish P64 9mm Makarov. Here is a photo beside a .50 BMG cartridge.
