It is not disrespectful, but come on winning overall is THE winner of Le Mans.

The Ferrari GTO that came 2nd but won it's class did NOT win Le Mans, it came second.

You have to include the fact that the rules modified, or a special class was created, to enable the MC12 to race.
These cars SHOULD be designed with a sanction series rule book in the designers hands, like the 250 GTO and GT40 were.

    Would be fantastic!!
    Skovbo,

Can you please explain to me what a modern supercars point is?

In all seriousness the only one I can come up with is to make a tidy profit. There is no point to their performance as they don't race ... and remember street racing is illegal and totally stupid.

A great design, or machine, is one that fulfils it's purpose completely ... supercars have no purpose that I can find.
    1. Is it for cruising?, a '56 Chev convertible probably does this better.
    2. It's not for moving the family around as not enough seats.
    3. Is it for spirited canyon sprints? ... hmmm, unfortunately illegal in most countries.
    4. Is it for the rich so they can hire a race track and do laps? ... if it was actually designed for lapping race tracks, why not finish the design and design it for a race series?.
    Pete
ps: I still love the engineering and would own a F40 in minutes if I could afford one ... what would I do with it though?

Why do you need a purpose? No Ferrari (Or Porsche or Lambo or Mclaren etc..) should be purchased with these many questions. If you have to ask yourself these questions, you will not get it. What is the purpose of racing anyway?

I am sure the main reason James is racing, is for fun, for his pleasure. Same concept as buying an F40 or an Enzo. For Fun and pleasure.

99% of the time i drive my porsche i achieve the same result as if i was driving a Honda or Hyundai. But i enjoy the experience.

I'm surprised that a guy that has over 12000 posts in this car forum doesn't understand the purpose of modern supercars.

It's basically the same idea to why buying a 20M$ mansion when you know you will not occupy 80% of it... or simply why buy a 2000$ LV wallet instead of 20$ fake leather wallet.

I hope I am not included in that statement as I don't plan to go away. I may be considered a big fan of McLarens and certainly that is where I focus a large majority of my attention, but I am a fan of supercars first and foremost and am just as eager to see the new Ferrari as most of you.

I have a number of Ferrari models, Ferrari books, and despite not always liking their decisions on track there is even a Scuderia Ferrari flag on the wall. I have long considered the Ferrari F50 my second favorite car. I even extended my stay in Italy earlier this year to allow time to visit Maranello and at the end of the day shelled out some coin to rent an F430 Scuderia outside Museo Ferrari. If I had no passion for the brand none of that would be true.

My posts here - even if they sometimes stray to the topic I am most fond of - are never meant to upset the masses and hopefully that isn't the case. :)

There's a reason all four (Jag) of the new hypercars are alternate energy vehicles.

Besides the regulations that will make it much more important to be fuel efficient and recapture energy that would otherwise be wasted like it or not there's growing political pressure to reduce greenhouse emissions. KERS and other systems such as TERS along with greener tires and improved aero are all things that will make it possible for the cars we love to continue. Scoff all you want at the effects of climate change but walk through what's left of the Jersey Shore before you do. These four hypercars are all coming into existence to deal with these issues. Racing stresses mechanical systems and improves mechanical systems by showing engineers what has to be done to survive the rigors of a 24 hour race. There is no question it improves the breed but as the head of Politecnica recentely said it's been a while since racing was directly linked to the cars most drive. I race to leave something behind for the next generation. I didn't always but the Green racing I now do does. We brought 800 tires to the Ring in 2011. Working with our sponsors we hope to develop tires that can go faster longer which will reduce waste. The 918 is an Engineering marvel which will have a huge effect on making all future Poesches much greener. The same is true of P1 and will be for F70. I hope they all go racing and have worked with the FIA to set up a class where they can. The F70 won't be able to use it's V12 for racing but a 458 GT3 motor with it's direct injection will work fine with the F 70's KERS and Shape. I really hope that the factories will take their top of the line hypercars racing or if they won't that other privateers will join us. Should anyone want to take a 918, P1 or F 70 racing we'll be happy to help.

The reason you need a purpose is that without a purpose that moves us off of the course we're on it will all come down. Porsche, McLaren, Ferrari and other manufactures realize this and that's why their top of the line Supercars are alternate Energy Vehicles. I applaud that but feel the time has come to challenge them to come racing and perfect what they've begun.

What does any of this have to do with the F70? This dick measuring should be done in its own thread.

Back to the F70, is there any update on when Ferrari will release official photos of this Beast? I have said this before, I believe this thing will move the goal posts as the Enzo did before it, I have a feeling, it is going to be seriously stunning. I cannot wait personally.

I just hope Ferrari don't choose to release this one to the world with another set of overly enhanced studio shots like they are so famous for.

Anyway, it will be hard for the new car not to exceed the initial reactions the Enzo received upon release of this photo below.

He won the championship overall :).

    Amen!
Well I don't. If I want to go fast I go racing. That is what it is for.

I don't even modify road cars to make them faster because its a waste of time. I just drive around their issues when I need to, but when the family is in the car it is about enjoying the journey at a speed that all my family are comfortable with.

Your last sentence confirms that supercars are made for the makers to make a tidy profit because it appears they are bought not as a car but as a financial statement ... what a waste of all that engineering IMO.

I have a suggestion, perhaps the very reason you see not point to supercars is the fact you live in a nanny state where if one drove at 81 km/h or 101 km/h one would pretty much pass everything on the road. NO Ferrari, NO Porsche makes any sense in Australia and dare it say it DRIVING makes no sense in Australia.

Supercars are not pointless, look at P4/5, surely thats a supercar, just look at the various videos on youtube, the reaction of people to that car, look at various threads here, the supercar by nature is like Peter says a machine to inspire people. Tell me you dont stand next to an F40 and go "wow"

Objectively the P1 is merely a variant of the 12C, McLaren have admitted that it shares substantial parts with the 12, hardly bespoke.

I actually disagree with you on that one. Australia is actually one of the few places you can enjoy these cars. You just need to go to Tasmania or the Northern Territory. Having taken my cars to both these places, please tell me where else you can drive for 1500 kms and see maybe 50 cars over two days. The roads are awesome and safe with no people nearby.

En moenie se dat jy kan so ry in Suid Africa :)

You seem to miss the whole point. There is no meaning in just being first at something, even though Ferrari has many "firsts". Being the BEST is all that matters though! Look at the MP4 12C with its trick suspension, carbon cell and all. Soundly beaten by the 2 year old 458 by most accounts! So what's the point in innovating just for innovation's sake? Innovation should produce superiority. We all know that Ferrari produces superiority; in the past 10 odd years, all it's cars have been highly acclaimed and praised! That's what really matters.

As for producing road cars with a racing rulebook in hand, I find it silly! There is no point in stifling creativeness (not necessarily innovation; just reducing options). Why would Ferrari want to limit its options regarding engine size and technology, exterior dimensions, tub materials (the highly innovative carbon tub in the F70 would not be allowed) and everything else for that matter? The sky should be the limit; not a silly rulebook!

PS: Perhaps this post came out as a bit aggressive. Didn' t mean to sound offensive though. Cheers. :)

Unfortunately, for the racers on in this discussion (and that includes me), the F70, P1, 918, Jag etc exist because the manufacturers feel there is a market for them and the profit margins are worth the effort. If market success became inextricably linked to race performance, then they would surely race, but that is not the case... so they won't. Simples.

Northern Territory perhaps....but thats quite far from many a main city and even then I am lead to believer Mr Copper is still hidden behind a random bush here and there. SA has the Karoo, barren, hot, dusty, some great road and mountain passes. Hang on our Karoo sounds a lot like the Northern Territory...

    Kudos on the Afrikaans ;)

    Important facts
No one else was competing in the FIA Alternate Energy Cup-Speed Circuit Events Category 7 and the VLN E1XP class. To win both, the FIA Championship and class in the VLN race, all that was needed was the P4/5 C to finish the race.
