My sentiments exactly, except they SHOULD HAVE protested during the race. Now it is over and they should not mess with the results. I'll have a lot more respect for them if they say they know what happened but will let it be, than go cry to FIA and become champions. My father told me long time ago that you can tell true champions by the way they loose, not the way they win. And he was a pro athlete for 25 years, so he should know a thing or two about it.
Allowing Vettel to get away with cheating is in itself the FIA condoning cheating and unsportsmanlike conduct. End of story. Vettel deserves a time penalty and if that boots him off the WDC podium then so be it. There is no interpretation to be had for passing under yellow, it's clear cut and dry he broke it on more than 1 occasion during that race finalé. Scuderia Ferrari should or should not contest, but if you ask me it's up to Vettel and Red Bull if they want to be remembered as cheats or relinquish their P6 finish like TRUE CHAMPIONS/WINNERS.
Here's a better interpolation of the illegal pass: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=F3tp3QDAkgo http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/559003_10152328997720601_756060190_n.jpg
Seems there may be a legitimate case, however..... at a minimum, they should then pore over the onboard footage of every driver for both quali an race, for every race of the season and discover all of the infractions that were missed live by the marshals. Don't forget to look at pit lane infractions, plus examine all photos taken at every race to spot any violations and illegalities that escaped the normal protocols of the weekend. Once all that is done, chronologically assign the penalties, shuffle the finishing positions, oh wait re-run the races where grid spots would have changed ..,,. Then see who is WDC at the end.
I do not care if a marshal is holding a pink flag or his salami when it happened. The yellow lights and the word "flag" were CLEARLY ON VETTEL'S DASH. That is an indisputable fact. From what I understand it is an electronic system which "trips a wire" when they cross the boundaries of a certain zone. Be it to start or end certain flag condition. Ferrari should have protested it during the race and they did not. They protested (if they did) the wrong pass. You snooze you lose. All the teams try to slide one by all the time. It goes to show the state the Scuderia is in right now. And has been for a wile. They lost Felippe's title in '08 and they lost it this year. In both occasions the drivers did everything they could to win it and damn near did, besides the team's f-ups. Now let's get over it and hope for the better next year.
When is a pass not a pass? When the driver ahead deliberately slows down to allow the following car to overtake? Watch how close the Toro Rosso is to the two cars ahead of it - it's a 3 car train around the first 3 corners. Now look at how close it is down the straight approaching turn 4 where Vettel overtakes - the TR is now suddenly a long way back. Why? Because it deliberately slowed down to let the sister RB car get by. If the passee deliberately slows to let the passer get by, is that against the rules? Or was Vettel supposed to slow way down and stay stuck behind a deliberately slower car? I believe this has happened before, when a slower driver wants to let a faster car by and slows, forcing the pass under waved yellow. I also believe it wasn't a penalty when that scenario has happened before, either. If Toro Rosso protested that move, then it almost certainly would have received a penalty. On the other hand, if Toro Rosso told the stewards "No, we have no objection, our driver deliberately slowed down to let Vettel by, it was not a racing overtake"... then that's the end of the conspiracy theory. Period.
Nah I don't believe I do, you can see there's a guy having waved a green flag there, its coming out onto the part of the track right where the pit lane dumps you out, you can see the white lines from the pit lane.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but with a true yellow flag, cars are required to have flashing lights on the dash, and they were NOT flashing on Vettel's car. That should put the argument to rest. Obviously the stewards saw that video, and many more. They'd NOT pass something like that, especially with Ferrari pushing it. He won fair and square.
If you have a guy wave a green flag and a driver overtakes even though the flag wasn't supposed to be waved you can't fault the driver for the mistake of the marshal. All this stuff about trying to find one little thing to get Vettel a penalty is just sour grapes. Fernando lost and he had more than his fair share of help on the way to that result. Ferrari needs to make a better car and come back next year and try to win it, that's all.
I don't see a lap counter on the video you posted, and it seems like there's plenty of cars together like in the photo I posted.
They don't flash on the steering wheel; just either on or off and in the vid it clearly shows it's on before and after the pass.
I absolutely agree with everything you said about Ferrari not winning the title and having to make a better car next season. I also think it is silly to try to find something to steal the title from Vettel after he won it. I look at it as a mistake during the race on Ferrari's behalf. And I definitely think it would be just plain wrong to pursue the issue at this time. But there was an illegal pass and it is a fact. I also could not believe for even a second that at 150mph+ in the rain a driver will see a marshal on the side of the track and not see the lights right infront of his face or on the fence. That would be just ignorant if the team makes such an argument. But then again it is just what it is and there is no point in trying to judge it, when the fat lady has already sung.
Nope- there was a car deliberately slowing down to let Vettel by. Just ask Toro Rosso, I would bet a large amount of money that would be the explanation you'd get. That was not a racing pass. Any other car, then maybe. Again- look at how close the TR is following the two cars in the preceding three corner sequence, then look at how far back the TR is when Vettel goes by. It's OBVIOUS that the Toro Rosso deliberately slowed down to let Vettel go by. That's not a pass.
Hey I just remembered.....where are all the guys who said "two in a row is one thing, but 3 in a row just won't happen"
I didn't go quite that far, but I certainly noted that 3 running is *incredibly* rare. I definitely didn't think they'd do it. I was wrong...... Congratulations on the achievement. Trouble now is, I couldn't bet against 'em getting 4 in a row. IIRC, only Michael has done that (?) Cheers, Ian
