Very nice, front 2/3 looks a bit like a 599.

    That's the old 987.

Maybe they'll have orange as a choice for the 981 also.

I hoped the new Cayman would have the same front end as the new Boxster...apparently not. Hopefully it's some sort of camo.

I know...I had one. :) I just had to have it based on the rear 3/4 view alone!

I'm hoping they do offer the orange for the 981!! It would probably look great! I like the look of the new car, not sure if I like it as much as the 987, though.

Yeah.. Very nice. Knowing that 2013 in the spy photo is probably somewhat camoflaged and that it will no doubt be just as big an improvement and well received as the new Boxster 981 has been, I still say the Cayman 987.1 or .2 are pure classic Porsche. Not just that, but they also have the athletic and hard edge the Carreras don't. Depending on the view angle it has the athletic look like the Carrera GT and GT3.

I'm with you -- love that orange. Hadn't ever seen it before. Is it a standard/option P-car color, or a photoshop?

Unless I'm mistaken (I very well could be), I'm thinking it's a slightly orange-y photo of Nordic Gold.

The last year of the Gen 1 Cayman was 2008.... to fill the gap before the Gen 2 came out in 09... they made a special "sports edition" 08 model that you could get in GT3 Green or Orange. I always loved orange cars... pretty cool!

I wish the R version, or whatever the 981 equivalent will be called, would come out closer to the beginning of the model's life instead of being a farewell throwaway.

Unavailing is tomorrow at the LA Auto show... but this white 981 photo may have slipped out a day early. It shows one of the major changes to the new design- the 6 inch strip below the spoiler and above the license plate .... 981 looks like its vertical, where-as the red 987 looks more horizontal.

I love this car, especially the latest R version. I am not too sure about the rear tail lights on the new design though. I will need to see this in person.

    Looks fantastic.

I like the deleted script option on the rear deck -- otherwise it feels like a lengthy reading assignment.

    Just looking at the changes

Notice the bottom of the 987... the bodywork around the exhaust is painted red. But look at the 981 and the same bodywork is painted black. Everything in the 981's design seems to shift your eyes upward. The taillights are higher, and that new vertical strip of bodywork above the license plate seems to take the place of the unpainted bodywork that surrounds the tailpipes. In other words, each car has the same amount of color-matched bodywork on the back, but Porsche has shifted everything upwards by painting the bottom of the 981 black.

It may be just the photographs, but the impression I'm left with is that the new Cayman has gained a bit of weight in middle age.

Which isn't to say that the design is unappealing, but it seems to work a bit counter to the car's image as I understand it: lightweight, nimble, and athletic. I'm not sure that this design expresses those elements as well.

I agree... why does everything have to get bigger as it gets older? ;)

Partial reveal from LA Auto Show this morning, before official 3:00est full reveal. Plus some quick clips of the new Cayman commercial...

The new Boxster compares quite favorably with the previous model in the areas of performance, size, fuel efficiency, and vehicle dynamics.

I'd expect similar improvements in all the same areas with the Cayman (fingers crossed!). Also, Porsche's drive to improve fuel economy will rest, in part, on maintaining vehicle weight (or decreasing it) so I'm not too worried about the Cayman increasing in size and/or weight.

Size will go up, weight will be down... (more use of lightweight materials).

I'm just looking at it from a "beauty in the eye of the beholder" point of view. I like the current model... and hope they can improve on the looks, but its not going to be easy. Fingers crossed they don't bulk-up the sexy lines ;)
