Indeed. My "home page" happens to be Fchat. I'm not stupid enough to enter the F1 forum if I'm in the dark about the current state of affairs. Trouble is, I don't need to if my timing is "wrong". The most egregious (albeit unintended & in silver) example was someone posting a thread title "Usain Bolt, 9.65, World record!" prior to NBC airing that race during the Olympics. Spoilt it for many people. [AFAIK, no ban issued either.] I guess my only point is, please think a little about your thread titles - You can certainly say what you want inside the post...... It ain't that hard is it? Cheers, Ian
+1 I agree, 3 days does seem a little excessive...... OTOH, I guess he'll never fall foul of the rule again. Cheers, Ian
48 hours is the new 24 hours. OP had ****tiest timing on the F1 planet, which slightly increased ban length to the new 36 hours, which is, of course, 72 hours. Disclaimer: I had nuttin' to do with it.
I agree about the timing but the fact that it happened to Ferrari again to have a championship decided at the last race of the season gave me the idea. As for the structure of the site, I believe that the "latest post" shouldn't be visible from the start page so someone could browse the site freely and be unaware of any F1 discussion or thread and avoid it if they don't want to know. Not sure if this could be disabled only on race day only but I could live with it being disabled permanently.
The solution is for posters to think before they post. Building infrastructure into every transaction just to counteract the occasional mistake by someone would be something to avoid in my opinion. This is a web forum not a credit card processor.
You need to get out a little more. I got banned for a month on Benzworld.org because I had criticized a mod for posting a spoiler!!! Seems they think that a motorsports thread should consist of posting links to news agencies. They don't talk about things they just post headlines. Jerks.
Can you start your original thread again (without spoilers) as I think it's an interesting discussion. Have Ferrari ever won a WDC at the last race of the year?
I performed the ban, would do so again, and -will- do so again under similar circumstances. Everyone knew that this season came down to the last race, and there were only two outcomes: either Ferrari wins or loses the driver championship. A thread entitled "how many times has Ferrari lost the championship at the last race" posted immediately after that last race could -only- imply that Ferrari had in fact lost the championship. That is worse than a race spoiler, it's an entire season spoiler for those who do not yet know. I understand you say you do not post here often. It is important to understand a culture before diving in. For example, reading the sticky thread at the top of the forum -- the one from 2004. Re: editing thread - some devices lend themselves to certain types of moderation, others to different types. For tapatalk etc. it's tough to edit titles. Much easier to delete the thread, and that what I did. (Since the subject was interesting and now should not be a spoiler, it has been revived.) Harsh? Maybe. But you won't make that error again, and nobody had their season enjoyment ruined. Moderation is, after all, not about the individual, but rather the community. I hope you will continue to participate. Thanks Tillman
Here's my thoughts, worth what you paid. Had I not watched the race and seen a thread with the title "How many titles lost by Ferrari at the last race?" I would have immediately assumed that Alonso didn't win the WDC and would have been bugged by it. Intentions may have been innocuous, but the result definitely had a spoiler.
+1 If you haven't watched the race yet, don't be a retard and come to the F-chat FORMULA ONE section. It's not exactly difficult. I don't even get on the internet if I haven't seen the race yet.
Well, seems like there's somewhat of a consensus: 1-A mistake was made, obviously unintentional which resulted in a spoiler depending how you read it. 2-The punishment was a little too severe and could have been handled better considering my reputation. 3-There's always room for improving this wonderful site and we can all improve as users and pay more attention to the rules. I was also expecting to get blasted following my rant but most users seem to agree with me so that put a smile on my face. At this point, I'm 100% satisfied and ready to move on....thanks guys!
Who cares what happens on other forums... I was banned here for a week without breaking any rules, so I know what harsh is
Actually, pretty great: After getting my access back to Fchat which I love, I had a scheduled meeting which turned out to be a surprise party for me. Very nice and happy birthday . I have run afoul and been banned without notice yet as Tillman stated previously the community is what matters and I was running with scissors, a big no no. Welcome back . Gregg
Thankyou Sir! I for one appreciate your efforts. I'm sorry, buy you're still not getting it..... I'm certainly not a retard and stay out of the F1 section until I'm caught up - I often time shift FP & qualy at least. I know many here also shift many of the races. The problem is Fchat is my home page (OK, I could change that, but no need if folk follow the rules). I get up and fire up the 'puter & browser - Right there on the home page is the title of the thread last posted to - I'm not in the F1 forum, but there it is on the index page. I fire up additional tabs to check soccer scores, my fantasy team and so on while coffees brewing. Then settle in front of the TV and catch up with the world while (carefully!) surfing around - I know where I can and cannot go. I may even pop into silver if I'm really bored. [That got me one time during the Olympics which were all time shifted - I was pissed as I just didn't expect to see real time results in there.] Now, this one didn't affect me personally, but anyone that time shifted the race and saw that title (as Murphy's law will ensure of course) EVEN WITHOUT VISITING THE F1 FORUM has had their entire viewing experience ruined. This issue seems to blow up every year or so and someone often gets a ban for pushing back. Accept the rules, abide by them, and all is good. How hard can it be? Cheers, Ian EDIT; BTW, meant to also say "Happy birthday & welcome back" to the OP! Betcha won't do it again!
Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face... My take is: just don't go on the internet until you've watched the race. How hard can that be? Clearly it's not that pressing of a thing if you want to get online and **** around for on a car forum a few hours and expect to be immune from hearing the news. So when does the "spoilers" expire? When can you post freely about the results? If it's not within 48 hours that's even more ****ing stupid. I don't have a real big problem with the spoilers thing, but I don't think people should be banned. A warning would do just fine.
Which is why I bring up the point: Why not have something like this? (if it can somehow be programmed that it looks like this only on raceday it would be even better) Image Unavailable, Please Login
Here we go again..... Strictly speaking, the spoiler rule *never* expires!..... Someone pushed back on that last year (?) by posting the winner of the previous years title - Very clever and all that, but still got a brief ban for their trouble. Don't like the rule? **** off then. [Not aimed at you personally btw - Thanks for your understanding of what you consider a silly rule. I beg to differ, and every time this comes up consensus is it ain't that hard.] Cheers, Ian
I think that the problem arises is when folk are not too familiar with the way it works. I can see it from both sides, heated debated, in lets say not a spoiler race thread, words can slip out revealing the result, in all fairness IMO the best bet is not to go into the F1 at all or even F chat, to be really on the safe side, but each to there own I suppose. (which I have done on the rare occasion I missed it live) << hard to do though.. Up to that point, I suppose as you have said all along the system we have got in place is the one that has been sanctioned, and breaking the rule, has the following result.
