I was looking for a new DD. I didn't want to spend a lot on something that's going to depreciate a ton, wanted AWD, four seats and reasonable room. After hunting around and driving every sedan on the planet, I bought a 2000 Carrera 4 with 40k miles in the mid $20's.

I talked to a bunch of Porsche guys before I bought it to figure out why they are so cheap and basically, they all said it's like driving a Camry and not a 911. They said they're reliable, reasonably quick, just not exciting. But looking at what I got for the money, I didn't see how I could pass it up. The car was like brand new inside and out.

So that was a few weeks ago and I have to say that this thing has really surprised me. Yes, it's not a exciting as the Ferrari, sure it drives a little like a Japanese car, and yes it's a little bland. But I have never been in a car that does so many things so well. It's fun enough, quick enough, practical enough, eye catching enough, and special enough to check off every box I could ask for in a daily driver. It's great. AND it's not to expensive AND it's not going to depreciate a ton more. What more could I ask for?

I'm sure that I'll do a couple of little mods in time...

Already ordered one. One of the things I liked about it is that the roof has slots for the Porsche rack.

I got two sets of wheels with it - one with Michelin a/s sports - and look forward to trying it in the snow. I might have to go with real snow tires but that's no problem if it comes to that.

I think that you and I have similar climates and altitudes. By the way, the red car is currently getting the upgrades we talked about. Several weeks out from everything being done but ill let you know the end result.

I still think you should have bought my buddy's Toyota minivan. Much more practical, vastly cheaper and with a few mods you could seriously screw with people's minds at the stoplight drag races.

PS: When will we get our "beater" Porsches and gold chains together and crusie for chicks?

I don't think that Porsches work for picking up chicks. They think Porsche drivers are even bigger DB's than Ferrari owners.

from my experience, at least in LA, the "Porsche owners are DBs" stigma is gone.

now, nobody pays any attention...just too many of them. they're now stealth in some weird way.

This is tempting. A 1 piece pantsuit I presume? Sorry I'm not up to snuff with 1980s Ferrari fashion wear. Is it 2 sizes too small as well? ;) we need pix

A Toyota minivan (aka chick magnet) would prove you are comfortable about your masculinity. The owner climbed Capitol Peak with me. You said you're too scared. Takes big balls to drive a minvan! It's still for sale.

I get my 991 on Monday, I cannot wait. I took Chas's recommendation and ordered a PDK.

The 996 is probably the least athletic feeling 911 I've ever driven, but they're all good in their own way. I think you have to step up to a 993 before you really feel like the car is waiting to kill you. They have reached a price point where it's not too hard to exceed expectations, but if I had paid $100K sticker for a 996 4S cab I'd be feeling a bit low.

I'm thinking of doing the PDK route in a new Cayman. I had the DSG in my ex-Audi TT and it was excellent.

Did you order the sport steering wheel with the paddles, or did you like the standard button arrangement?

Hi Jon, I saw the new Cayman at the LA Auto Show on Thursdy evening, it's beautiful. I almost actually bought the new Boxster, but due to my daughter went with a 991. I would never get the buttons, I got the sport wheel with paddles, this is the first non manual Porsche I bought for me. I will post pictures Monday, but I got a White Car with the Glass Roof and Porsche Classic Wheels.

Before I bought my car, Porsche invited me to their World Driving Experience (or whatever) where you spend a day driving all of their cars on the track in a reasonably spirited manner. I drove every one they have except the 911 turbo and all had PDK. The paddles simply blow away the buttons in every respect. It's a much more positive feel to the paddles than the buttons.

100% correct, the software on the 991 PDK is a huge improvement over the 997.2
