We typically don't fly empty very often. Every once in awhile a plane will go out empty, with just a stack of empty pallets. It's usually the back end of a charter flight. This is my first experience with the -8 empty. While I'm used to the size of the 400, this thing is massve. The first pic (with red flag) is from the nose looking aft. You can see the empty pallets stacked in what looks like the middle of the plane(actually quite a bit forward). The second shot is from the rear looking forward. You can barely see the red flags (3 of them) in the nose. The yellow stairs lead to the upper deck and are visible in the second pic as well.

Bob, the plan is for a 7:05 departure out of KPAE on the 20th....

Great shots, Lou. I don't know if I will be able to be present on the ramp. Security is abominable now at Boeing. Even as an old PD guy I can't get into anything without special dispensation from high up mucky-de mucks. Thanks to the techno/cyber assaults of some of the Asian and European firms out there. Just an informative input, Dana works second shift and might not be available for a meeting unless he can get a day off. I will probably be loose enough to greet you so please let me know when you know.
Question. When my wife and I were walking at the Edmonds Marina the other day I noticed a contrail coming over the Olympics over the Straights of San Juan De Fucca that appeared to be coming from the Pacific, parallel to the western coast of Vancouver Island and at a heading of something like 120 deg. As it passed the Olympic Peninsula it then turned to a heading of approximately 160 or 170 and continued on its way straight as an arrow. We were wondering where this guy was going. Any clues? Denver?

I understand about the security issues and how hard it is to get on the ramp nowadays. I should be up in Seattle the night of the 18th. The 19th I may fly to Moses Lake and back...but I'm not sure about that yet. I'm not sure if Boeing has anything planned for us yet. I believe they may be taking us to dinner one of the nights.

As far as the flight you saw, you're probably right. Denver, or maybe Dallas. I think both are about the same heading from there. I'm not too familiar with domestic USA flying. I went from 7 years at United Express flying Brasilias up and down CA to Polar, flying 747s internationally. Now NCA for me is mostly Pacific flights.

I'll keep you posted as the time nears. Hopefully we can meet up.

Lou, are the yellow upper deck stairs always extended or do they retract up into the upper deck?

If you look at the pic, you can see the hinges in the stringers and breaks in the railing.

    So it folds.

Was also noticing the different (lower) ceiling height under the upper deck - see the second pic.

As an aviation enthusiast and someone who makes their living in the aviation industry I have to thank you a great deal for this thread. I just read the entire thread and all the pictures and explanations are just awesome. The -8 seems like an amazing aircraft! I am a controller at Cleveland Center and actually worked my first -8 the other day. I don't recall what airline but it was out of IAD. Does NCA fly out of IAD? Have also been working the JAL 787's a decent amount lately from Narita to JFK. Although an 800 looks just like a 172 on my scope I love being able to talk to the pilots of all the latest and greatest aircraft! Thanks again....can't wait to see the pictures of the delivery trip!

Most likely Lufthansa - and a passenger flight as well (only airline with the -8i in service).

After chatting with a co worker today, he reminded me the call sign was GTI which is Atlas Air. He also remembered that was not out of IAD, but HSV. I was all screwed up on the details except that it was an -8!

Here's a better pic of the ladder. This one's on a 400, but they're the same. It does fold and stow in order to load the front pallets. It stays down and locked after cargo loading is complete. Although our main emergency exit is upstairs, we need access to the main deck as well in an emergency. As the upper deck in above this area, the ceiling is lower as Tcar mentions.

We (NCA) fly ORD to JFK twice a week. That would take us through your airspace. But it's only the 400 that flies that run for us. Sorry, I just re read and see that it was a Atlas flight.

I'm glad you enjoyed reading the thread. Sometimes I feel like I should stop posting. But the airplane keeps giving me reasons to add a few more pics from time to time.

I look forward to talking to you on the radio sometime..... Lou

I agree with Spasso, don't stop posting and keep info coming. That's what makes this venue so interesting. I think that I should stop sometimes but it's too much fun and it is invigorating to dredge up some stuff from a little bit ago.

I was thinking back to when I was working on the 747-500/600 study that I think lead to the 747-8. The study airplanes were pretty expansive with the wing tips being out of bounds on each side of a standard football field and the nose just 20 feet from the goal line when the tail was at the goal line at the other end. They would have been better if they had the present day engines but they were good as they were and would have given the A380 a sour stomach. The present 747-8 has a much better and more efficient revenue/volume cargo capacity than the A380 as a freighter that would do well if it was carrying pingpong balls in the excess volume. And the -8 is close in the efficient passenger carrying category. It doesn't require special support equipment or beefed up runways and taxi strips and special gates.

The economy has put a big damper on air freight. There are many 747-400 freighters being parked, with some even ear marked for scrap. Boeing will be hard pressed to get many new orders for the -8F (only 2 since 2009).

Thanks for the support guys. I'll take some more pictures when I go back to work. I have the next 2 weeks off. I'll definitely take pictures of the new plane in Seattle. I believe it's test aircraft #3. So not really new. Maybe 2 1/2 years old?

I spoke with a gentleman at Boeing yesterday concerning the delivery on the 20th. He said fly bys are sort of a thing of the past. The airport manager has approved an approach (gear and flaps down) to a go around. But there's nothing really exciting about that. A "wing wag" after departure seems to be the norm nowadays. Nothing too exciting there either, but may give it a go. It would be cool to get some "keys" to the airplane. I believe there is a ceremony, but it will happen before I get up there. Something to hang on the wall to remember the day would be nice....

Sitting in ANC next to Asiana 400. The airfoil of the -8 is quite different. You can see the curve under the wing that the 400 doesn't have.
