    Hey,

    Seems that after a little bickering they've all agreed to Todt's revised entry fee scale. In summary; Each team must now make a basic $500,000 payment, with the constructors' champions then paying $6000 per point scored and every other team paying an extra $5000 per point.

    Here's the list;

    1. Red Bull Racing 460 points $3.26 million
    2. Ferrari 400 points $2.5 million
    3. McLaren 378 points $2.39 million
    4. Lotus 303 points $2.015 million
    5. Mercedes 142 points $1.21 million
    6. Sauber 126 points $1.13 million
    7. Force India 109 points $1.045 million
    8. Williams 76 points $0.88 million
    9. Toro Rosso 26 points $0.63 million
    10. Caterham 0 points $0.5 million
    11. Marussia 0 points $0.5 million
    12. HRT 0 points $0.5 million

    FWIW, poor ol' HRT has already been given dispensation to delay payment [Due Friday]

    Cheers,
    Ian

    Or not as the case may be;

    I know there's some here who will say, "so what" & "good riddance". For sure, they never troubled the scorers, but to me at least losing any team is always sad. :(

    Cheers,

    Hmmm. And what of the rumored "24 car rule" that Bernie supposedly labors under?

    If that exists, I would expect a roundabout rescue of HRT by Bernie, to avoid penalties.

    He may yet bail 'em out, but I'm pretty sure his deal is a minimum of 20 cars on the grid. Below that it starts to cost him with the almighty TV companies. Not sure about individual race promoters. (Anyone?)

    I agree, it is always sad to lose a team.

    What I don't understand is what these teams think they will get in F1?

    It's a zero-sum game in that someone always has to be in first place, and someone always has to be last. It's a relative scale, not absolute. If Ferrari did exactly the same job they did this year, but all the other teams did better, then Ferrari would be last... and if HRT did the same but all other teams did worse, they would be reveling in glory like Red Bull.

    So given all of that, why do teams like HRT inevitably come along with their 5-year plan where they say they are just happy to be there in year one, in year two they are just happy for the point they scored, and it's year three they are making excuses for the beginnings of failure, and by year 5, they aren't saying much of anything.... if they make it to year 5.

    Who are the investors who think they will see success where countless others have seen failure? It seems the formula is clear. Red Bull is the gold standard. You dump a metric shatload of money in, hire the very best people, see a lot of success, but don't turn a profit because you spent so much to win.

    There will always be someone willing to earn a worse ROI for the kick of winning, so why do commercial enterprises think they can make a go of it in F1 when it's proven that the only ones who can do so are those who got in so long ago that their cost basis is fractionally less, like Williams and McLaren. And even amongst those two, Williams has almost blinked out plenty of times.

    And some investment group things they can churn a profit with HRT? Insanity.

    The (100? 200?) million $ question right there......

    Don't know the answer, but suspect it's like pretty much all motorsport; It's damn good fun! And having the wherewithal to do it at that level must be *awesome*.....

    You're not gonna make any money until you get towards the front, but it must be a whole lot of fun trying......

    Cheers,

    I'm really surprised there is not some quasi-nationalized Chinese team.

    Is there any benefit in purchasing HRT for next to nothing to acquire team status in F1, similar to the Tyrrell - BAR transition? I'm wondering if a team who plans to enter the 2014 season in earnest might see an opportunity in securing the rights a year early.

    When looking back at a few of F1's forgotten minnows, the one I give full credit is Enzo Coloni. He somehow managed to return for five seasons although his cars rarely qualified or finished and never scored a point.
    After failing pre-qualifying for an entire season, he remarkably secured a buyer the following year (after unloading the team to Subaru for a time....) who predictably suffered a similar fate but decided to double the humiliation by running a two car team.

    Good questions. ;)

    My 02c, FWIW;

    - They'd only have value (beyond equipment etc) if the grid was already full. I'm pretty sure the Concorde limits 'em to max 26 cars. If more than 13 teams want in, and you're already in, you've got value...... [See your buddy Coloni. ;)]

    Right now, with it seems 11 teams, I reckon any potential noob would be better served by approaching the Pygmy directly and asking for an entry. Maybe pick up their autoclaves & trucks etc.....

    Outside of that, not so much.

    Cheers,
    Ian

    While I understand how and why the FIA do this, I still don't get this kind of thinking short of calling it greed.
    Lots of examples in life of this kind of penalizing success, but I always find it a bit baffling.

    I certainly hear you.

    But, in this case at least I don't think it is greed. I'm pretty sure the FIA itself has never made any (significant (*)) money from F1 yet their costs are astronomical. Further, I believe the teams have been making numerous additional payments covering things like transport for the medical/safety cars, broadband connectivity, the famous "weather service" and so on.

    This kind of rolls it all into one. Further, JT wants to move to new digs! I guess "#1, Place De La Concorde, Paris" isn't a nice enough addy. ;)

    Then there's support for the road safety initiative and all the other ("non revenue") series they run - I don't have a problem with the fat-cats in F1 having to spread it around a little.

    (*) - This is, of course down to our old nemesis Mad Max who gave the rights away to his buddy the Pygmy. [Suspect Krafty may be along with a rant soon. ;)]
    Cheers,
    Ian
