So I'm at C+C this last weekend and this guy comes up and asks if his little boy can sit in the car. So I say sure. He hops in and they take their million pictures.

I start to talk to someone else and then I hear *click* *click* as the little guy starts rowing through the gears. I get annoyed and then ask him to please stop doing that. After which they get out of the car.

Does this happen to other people? I mean I have no problem with people taking a pic in the car.. but to then start playing with it. Am I the only one who gets annoyed by this. And the dad btw said nothing...

A child's natural curiosity and is to be expected. Never take your eyes away from your child or anyone else's. They mean no harm but, can do so without supervision. With kind supervision learning and fun abound. ;)

I agree... he was excited and well.. a young man. It just irritated me that the adult, his dad or granddad didn't enourage respect of another persons car or thing. Other adults that I let their children sit in the car had done so. From now on.. eagle eyes! And a whapping stick for NO TOUCH! ;)

Kids will be kids yet I understand your concern. I met and interacted with kids when I was a deputy sheriff and had to scold a few who felt it was FUN to touch my gun, parents had no recourse but to agree. Parenting these days leaves ALOT to be desired imo.

I have to be VERY careful of the fragile column switches...but once, I was at the Children's Museum doing my stencil painting gig (over 700 pieces that day!)..and I turned around to find some kids had climbed in the Ferrari, knocked it into neutral, and it was rolling off down the sidewalk, quietly...with them inside!!

They really don't teach 'respect' anymore...so be careful!

I caught it before it left the sidewalk over the curb to the street....barely!

Yeah, I use to get the same irritation until I started with quick ground rules before a person would get it. Something to the effect of:

"remember that you need to be respectful of all of the surroundings. Car guys really like their machines so dont move anything within reach."

That normally takes care of things.

When I get a chance I will teach anyone who will listen how to behave at a car event. It amazes me how many people think they can just act like these things are theirs. I keep my head on straight & do it with a smile.

Not having kids my self, I guess i dont have the parental view point... so maybe I'd be just like some mindless parents today... BUT:

My parents taught me to resepect other peoples property... house, car, & stuff... They taught me to ask first, say please and thank you... if I did something wrong I apologized immediately and did so repeadedly.

today's kids... I just dont see that anymore. My own neice and nephew ( college age kids) dont know the first thing about courtesey or manners. however they do know to say maam and sir... but that is about it.

They were in the UK with us about 5 years ago, at Blenheim palace... so we walk into the main dining room and one of the kids touches this huge silver centerpiece... in seconds there are 10 guards there so embarrasing... and the parents ... act like nothing .. Oh dont do that....

when I did something wrong... I used to get smacked with a hot wheel track!!! that will catch you attention!

I was with a Ferrari Dealer / collector at the Ga. Tech car show a couple of years ago, he had his F-50, Enzo, F-40 and 288GTO out for display. we were sitting next to the F-50 when a group of kids came running over and just started to smear their fingers all over the cars, one actually opend the door!!! all in full view of the parent (s) who said nothing... so finally we yelled at them - "Hey, dont touch the car!" so the kids response... You roll dat?
Owner responded "ya, I roll dat dont touch!".... needless to say we were the villians.... Rich SOB's!

I'm always happy for kids - or adults to try the car on for size and encourage picture taking... but I also pay attention... 2 min in the car and you can wind up with $2K of damage to the seats & uhpolstery... just sayin

Never underestimate a child's ability to involuntarily throw up in your car.

Let parents take pictures of their kids in their own car. It's just better that way.

    Yes, I have a kid.

I have grown children and grandchildren, I'm very easy about letting kids, and strange kids in my TR with supervision. In my hot rod I let them go at it, I can fix anything they break. Even though I don't want anything broken. I'm naive what does ya, (I roll dat dont touch!)
    mean?

A very famous Philadelphia guy, with a very famous collection, let me and the kids wander about his collection one morning. (Before it moved to it's new digs by the Philly airport.)

At one point one of my young men (maybe 7-8 yrs old at the time) asked him, "Could I sit in one?"

Two minutes later, he's behind the wheel of a 250 Testa Rossa. Then behind the wheel of a D type Jaguar, a Cooper, and finally, behind the wheel of a 1920's Bugatti. All race cars, all worth millions of dollars each.

That owner had no problem letting my kids sit in his cars with my supervision, and I had never met him before.

I have often times trusted in kids and given them the opportunity to sit in my cars and have a picture taken, etc. None has ever abused the privilege.

I do advise them not to touch anything but the steering wheel and I do check for goobers, sharp objects, etc, prior to letting them enter my car. The smiles you get in return are ALWAYS worth it.

Jeez you dodged one there! Knowing America and their sue happy species, if the car rolled into the road and another car crashed into it, YOU would be the one being sued by the kids parents!

Seems like they don't know boundaries with their kid. If you don't want this to happens roll up your windows and stand away from the car.

I doubt any harm was intended, or actually occurred. Its a gearshift lever. Unless the car is parked on an incline, or the young lad was armed with a sledgehammer, what damage could a young child possibly cause, compared to you actually driving the machine in anger? I've touched gearshift levers before, aren't they made of steel, and not paper or hand-blown glass? One missed-shift by an unskilled adult is going to do FAR more damage to your transmission than anything an 8-year-old could possibly muster....let's add some perspective here.

I'd have to disagree. A 6 year old kid unsupervised for 2 minutes could destroy a car's interior! haha

dad could have apologized imo. Kids though for the most part seem to do things like that I've had my share of broken pieces in my car do to friends/girlfriends children :(
as long as I'm reimbursed, its cheap, and or an apology is given I can sort of understand. That said I never got away with stuff like that I think I kicked the back seat once in my dad's thunderbird and got my a$$ beat lol

You can let people play with the gearshift lever in your cars all you want. In my car I don't care if it's an adult or a child, I don't row the gears unless the car is running. For a tranny that costs close to 10 grand to replace (that in this case I would be paying).. it's a "No".
Chipped gears and synchro wear SHOULDN'T happen with someone playing with the tranny, I'm not taking the chance.

I agree.. child didn't know. What annoyed me was the entitled Z3 owning adult DIDN'T.
