So I was on this rally a few weeks ago following another 348 ( a Series Speciale from Baltimore... thanks for the navagation Eric) and marveling at how great his engine sounded compared to my standard exhaust. Then I remembered a posting a while back from Bosshog8 where he made his own system (you're a brave man Demetrius...would have never occured to me to try that) and I figured, what the heck? A good excuse to learn to weld. Anyway, it looks a little rough (I ran out of the solid wire on a Sat. night and had to resort to flux core for a bit till the stores opened Sunday), but sounds great. There was a moral dilemma... I took out the cats too. I don't need emission testing for my state inspection and after reading about problems with glowing hot cats on some cars I opted out. So if you want to see bad amature welding can be, check these out:

(if they don't come up, just google "ferrari 348 homemade exhaust)

Great Work....what was your main motivation? Was it to save money or was it to see if you could get a kick out of doing it yourself?

I'm curious to know what drove you to do this....

Also, isn't it possible to open the oem muffler and change the internal flow of it to make it sound better? Has anyone done that? I'm curious....surely it would save a ton of work measuring brackets and adapting the tail pipes, etc...because all the fitting would already be perfect.

    What do you all think?

wanted better sound and wouldn't have thought of doing it myself 'till I saw Bosshog8's thread....then it seemed like a great project to try. Plus an chance to buy more tools!! Welder, cool helmet with flames, tank of Argon/CO2 etc etc. FYI it takes a ton of weight out of the ass end of the car. The original exhaust is damned heavy, this weighs very little.

Paul, you are an absolute nut, and I mean that in a good way. I can't think of anyone else who would say to themselves, "Hmmm, I'd like to learn to weld, I think I'll start out by welding up, oh, I don't know, how about AN EXHAUST SYSTEM FOR A FERRARI!!"

Anyway, the exhaust sounds great, and I remain in awe of your willingness to just try just about anything.

I'm glad my car was able to provide the inspiration for this project of yours.

As much as I've modified my car, I don't want to mess up the original equipment, so 99% of what I've done can be changed back to the stock conformation. Choppimg up the muffler would nix that, plus I don't know squat about the science of muffler internals. The off-the-shelf Flowmax did a stellar job. It sounds great, it weighs very little, and if I was a half decent welder I could have done it in a day

Hardly courageous. The worst that could have happened would have been an after-market muffler in the trash with assorted bits of pipe. I was putting the old muffler and cats in the attic, when I decided to put them on a scale: total of 54 lbs. I didn't weigh the new one before installation, but I'll bet it's less than 20.

Yes I hadn't considered that, it's true about the weight. I wonder how much my Nouvalari weighs?? Does anyone know the different weights between the different aftermarket exhausts? I smell a new thread coming....

    I love it!

That's some big time Stooging it.

Though I will say, the flow patter of that exhaust isn't optimum. None the less I still think it's awesome you made it, and thanks for posting it up. Thumbs up from me.
