I'm going to be replacing a 16 camera (analog) system soon that is old, and it seems that the new standard is IP cameras. Do you guys have any recommendations on brands to buy? Pricing seems to be all over the place on these, and not many manufacturers sell direct to consumer.

    Also, any suggestions for software?

Great site, hadn't found that in my searching.

Being somewhat of a DIY'er, I'm going to build a box to do this and try out TrendNet's power over ethernet megapixel cameras. The resolution of the current system is terrible so getting megapixel quality should be a nice boost, and using PoE should simplify installation. Also, TrendNet supplies free software with their cameras. It doesn't look quite as user friendly as some of the others but seems like its well featured.

Any estimates on how much footage 4TB could hold? The 3 and 4 TB drives look pretty unreliable from reviews so I guess I'll stick with the 2TB drives and put em in RAID 1.

Check out my company, we are a software company that integrates video and BI in a cloud environment on a subscription model. Our software lives in the cloud while the video lives on an appliance at the store. That being said our software is PC/MAC browser based (IOS and Android too)... We may be a bit overkill for a single video only location as we specialize in Multi-unit business intelligence integration, primarily for businesses that conduct cash handling, and expect to see a positive improvement on their bottom line.

To answer your question how much storage? It depends on number of cameras, resolution of the camera, frame rate, and what format you are recording. It varies 8 camera system should get about 60 days of storage on 3-4TB.

I'm more than happy to answer any questions. PM Me.

Your company looks like it does some great stuff, very interesting (from a personal perspective), but is definitely overkill for this application. Its going in a small apartment complex for theft/vandalism monitoring, so no need for BI.

The system I'm thinking of would be 18 cameras, 1280x800, 30fps, h.264. So it sounds like I may be too light on storage?

That's what I was thinking except having all recording kept locally, and while convenient, am still debating as to whether I'd need remote viewing. Its easy enough to set up down the road so to start I may leave it out.
