I am not surprised the Dino is overtaking the Daytona. I have always heard the Daytona drives like a truck below 80mph, and I basically never drive that fast. There was a fellow in the Ferrari Owners Club in the LA area in the mid-1980's that used to drive his at Riverside raceway and I remember it appearing to grind it's front tires to dust around the corners. It is a grand touring car designed for very high speed, basically straight roads. (Yes, I know they won Daytona, but those were specially prepared cars.)

The Dino can be enjoyed at ordinary speeds. IIRC Bill Noon posted something along these lines about a year ago.

Well, let's just put it on the line.

The Daytona is a great car but the aesthetics are questionable.

Think: Has the Daytona motif perpetuated? Umm, I'd say: No.

Then, consider the Dino. Possibibly considered the most beautiful car ever ( in coupe form).

So, one Ferrari supplants another as time changes? Yup, it happens.

    I can't imagine this wouldn't happen any more than a Daytona wouldn't outpace a 365GTC4.

What surprises me is that despite the fact that there were quite a few GTS made maybe even about the same as the 246GT and the GT is so much better looking why does the GTS command so much more money . I bought my GT and paid top dollar but no where near the prices I see on even run of the mill GTS cars.. I know that with the daytona the conv is worth about double or more then the coupe but they only built a few convertibles compared to coupes.
I think that the GT will catch up in value and then they will both continue to rise for the foreseeable future. Anyway I am glad I have my car love it...

They made about 2800 coupes and about 1200 targas (the GTS is not a true converible), and open cars have always had a certain appeal. They also are almost without exception much less rigid than their closed counterparts. So for people who just putt around the GTS is a logical choice. If you like to carve up onramps or curvy roads the GT is the better choice.

Personally I think the GTS looks really good in yellow WITH THE TOP OFF. When the top is in place that flat surface totally ruins the lines of the car.

Freeman, what do you think about that?

Absolutely right. I used to do rallies in Europe happily throwing the Dino around hairpins and up gravel tracks not really worried about minor mechanical and body repairs. Now its always on mind how much the Dino specialist is going to charge me because of the inflated valuations. Plus I worry about parking it anywhere in London just in case a cruising low-loader happens to pass by.
Is was more fun when they were affordable. I never intend to sell so I'll never realise the increased value anyway.

I concur completely. I won't realize any gain, since I don't plan on selling either of my Dinos. However, you still worry about damage to the car in today's chaotic traffic, with half the drivers texting and the other half either web surfing, talking on the phone or eating! Fred

But by Euro we meant without those unfortunate recessed side markers.

I understand and agree. The car was federalized when it was imported from Italy in 1978. Had it come to Canada instead of the U.S. the modification would not have been required.

As I have recently acquired the car(last week) I am compiling a list of must do's and what can wait for a bit. Since the paint is excellent I may wait for awhile to remove the lights and return it to euro spec.

Coupes have never been half the price of the GTS.
Even back in the late 1980's when the cars weren't worth much the GT was about 2/3 the price of a GTS.

Perhaps by some but still a matter of personal preference. The GTS was in no doubt offered to compete with the Porsche 911 "targa top" models. Simply a marketing effort on Ferrari's part.

"Cherished as the epitome of the breed", once again a matter of opinion and taste.

I prefer the coupe myself but I believe that GTS's purchased of late have been by investors versus enthusiasts. It will be interesting to see what happens in 5 years or so as the economies recover. I suspect that prices will somewhat equalize over time and the gap will close.

I'm not sure the GTS is the epitome of the breed. It is a more fun car to drive, with the top off, so topless cars in general, from VWs to Lamborghinis, attract a bigger market hence command a higher price. But if the Dino is the most beautiful Ferrari ever, and beauty the standard, then the GT must be the epitome of the breed!

I used to prefer open cars when i was young but later gravitated to the technical and visual purity of coupes. When I looked for a Dino in earnest, I wanted only the GT. There were plenty of GTSs, but a GT took almost a year to find. And I was looking all over the world!

But to each his own. They are both extraordinary cars.

Beauty, being as it is "in the eye of the beholder," is by definition a very subjective construct. That being acknowledged, it is still difficult to argue that the Dino, from its very first prototype configured as a coupe, had its appearance improved by flattening the roof, removing the quarter windows (possibly for rigidity), and adding a black targa top insert. I will now raise my bomb-proof shield, to withstand the barage from the GTS contingent! Fred

If there could be only one example of the Dino (coupe or GTS) in the Museum of Modern Art to represent timeless beauty, emotion and Ferrari, which one do you think would be there?

freeman, when i bought my audi tt (3.2), there was no doubt that the coupe was what i wanted. the roof line is what makes the car. back in 1980 when i bought my dino there was no question either i went for the gts !

You know what guys, we are splitting hairs over which sibling is the most beautiful.
They each have their followers and positive attributes. Can we simply and peacefully co exist and be thankful to have the luxury of debating over the merits of each?

I understand the appeal of the GTS for (somewhat) open air driving experience (I've had numerous non-Ferrari cars with removable roof panels), but with the panel in place, the GTS would look so much better if the panel were the body color (I've seen a few in person). In black, it just screams `look at me, notice how my lines aren't quite as perfect as my sibling the GT'.
