That is pretty damn low.... There is a guy here who got in a lot of trouble years ago for overflying an air show crowd at 50' in an A-10.
It's funny watching the guys on the ground scramble when he's flying in...but man that's pretty stupid if you ask me. Not a pilot, seems awfully dangerous...
LOL! I witnessed something along those lines in my early teens at a little airport in Wisconsin. Wonder if it was the same incident? Sure don't remember anyone complaining about the show at the time...
Like my father always said.... if your going to do something stupid, make damn sure you can pull it off! Terry
This brings back a buzz job that left a permanent mark in my memory. I thought that I would make a low run along the beach on Longboat Key. The wind was up and so was the surf, a good 6 or 7 feet. I was flying a PT-19 and had a good head of steam up when I flattened out quite low on the wash line on the beach it was like riding a covered wagon on a cobblestone road. The right wing was snatched down by some unseen demon and I was in salt spray for a split second until I made a fairly hard pull up out of the rotors on the lee side of the waves. Thought about that during a quiet ride at altitude. Noticed that the seat got a little wet.
This video clip has been posted before, but you know you're really low when your wheels start skimming on the surface of the water. Amazing pilots in these T6 Texans. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hDDBbmedrgk[/ame]
Sounds like one of those moments that leaves your fingers tingling and puts a funny taste in your mouth. I've had a few of those in turn 12 at Road Atlanta. Love the PT-19! When I was 12 or so, I had a Cox 0.49 powered tether cord PT-19 that I flew. Great fun! Terry
Woah... Just a quick gripe...why must everyone who posts a video on YouTube use that #%$!?n' Kenny Loggins song?? Doesn't matter if its slow flight in a Cessna 150 or jet fighter footage. "It's funny 'cause its cheesy" wore off a loooooooooong time ago. I think I'm going to write a new aviation anthem to wear out Anyway, cool video! I hope the guys on the ground had ear plugs in!
I was thinking about the T-6 water show and it occurred to me that water is more of an incompressible solid at those speeds and the reaction is more like that of a runway, reacting to push the wheels away if the angle of attack is shallow enough. Not to detract from those pilots in anyway, but Iv'e seen this done by many bush pilots and show offs. Any comments?
I think that you are correct. I used the wrong word to describe the blankets of MIST that I was flying through, no solid water since I was over the sandy part of the beach. The windshield was streaming a bit of water, though. Dumb stunt by a dumb kid.
We were all "Dumb Kids" once...I know "this guy" that fresh out of pilot training, took his jet off out of Navy Alameda, flew around the north bay to the Marin coast, then down the coast never getting above 50-100 feet most of the trip, unless scared $h!tless by flocks of seagulls taking off from the beach, and then popping up with Vandenberg Tower for "Direct to initial"! Really stupid...but fun...at least I "imagine" it was fun. Blue Skies, Hannibal
