McLaren plans to build all P1s through their McLaren Special Operations group which currently handles the customization requests for 12C buyers, and contains the former 'Customer Care' group that looks after the F1s and SLRs. In that sense, all of them will be customized to some respect. I've not talked to anyone about real options beyond cosmetic stuff but its something I can bring up when I see them again.

I too saw the video with Peter Stevens and I believe he was speculating. He's not part of the team at McLaren or directly involved in the project to my knowledge. He does maintain a close relationship with many of them and I witnessed him in discussions with Frank Stephenson and Dan Parry-Williams in Paris so depending on whether that interview came before or after those chats he might have been suggesting that based on some insider info - not sure?

I will be surprised if P1s KERS boost provides power to the front wheels on P1. That's not something I'd expect them to do at all, but I have been wrong at least one time before. ;)

BTW, do we know if the KERS-system on the F70 is limited to the rear wheels as well?

They will have a brake option from their current F1 Supplier and it will be extremely expensive, you can see it on the show car, and it is a big step up in Brake Technology, after some use the Disc becomes a really cool graphite color.

I got the impression the Akebono's would be standard on P1?

10 gallons of fluids is much more than 40 pounds though. Oil especially (I think the Enzo uses some 5-6 gallons of it) is much heavier than water (1 litre of water = 1 Kg approximately). Hence, Ferrari's claims are close to the truth.

Actually I was thinking of something different and got confused. Sorry about that. One US gallon of 30-grade motor oil is about 7.5 pounds of weight, thus slightly less than water.

I'll defer to Tony on what he has suggested as I know he's also had some close discussions with the folks at McLaren about the P1.

I never specifically asked one way or the other, but was basing my comment above on the fact that while I was discussing those very unique brakes on the Paris show car with one key player in the P1 project he never suggested to me they'd be an option.

McLaren is running these in their MP4-12C GT3 effort so probably the device selection if one is to entertain a heavy track presence with P1.

    ??

I don't think anything but steel brakes are GT3 legal.

    Has this changed?

Concerning all three of these cars. Do you think there is any chance Macca, Ferrari or Porsche will race any of these?

IMO the 918 will be raced.

I have approached McLaren about a P1 race program but nothing so far.

The F70 will never race as the only way it could would be to replace it's V12 with a V8.

You could probably enter it in EXP2 Hybrid even if you TT'd the V8 but the odds of anyone doing this are VERY small as I am frying other fish.

I heard one of the possible P1 brake upgrades available are the ones from the F1 car.

New desktop wallpaper today - one of the early design sketches of the McLaren P1 done by the P1's lead exterior designer, Paul Howse, back in 2010. Today it was featured as 'Photo of the Day' on CarDesignNews.com.

As I understand it the P1 rotors are the trick item and they are not iron.
