If you are speaking of a bead blasting cabinet I have one you are welcome to use If you feel like travelling.

I usually keep it full of walnut shell media which is far more gentile and more appropriate for aluminum parts if they are not terribly dirty. If you need heavier duty cleaning we can switch it over to glass beads. A little messy but not a huge job.

its a little bigger than will fit in a cabinet I think, but i appreciate the offer.

I need to strip this to bare metal, it has a light sheen of rust on it. Any ideas?

For an object of that size, you might also try a local powdercoating shop in your neighborhood that does this kind of work. They'll probably charge you $50 or something.

Check the phone book. There are a few regular sand blasting services in the Bay Area. You might find one over in San Rafael or Richmond.

Looks like a lambo subframe. I am afraid to ask.

Actually he is right. A powder coater can probably help you. Just leave it with him and have it coated in a satin black while it is there.

    Check Poly Engineering in Richmond.

Tombstone makers can do it. I had one sandblast a steel wheel for me for $12.

Poly did my cam covers on the 308, great place. I found of bunch of other things to powercoat after I did that.

I have an urge to do the sandblasting myself. While I have the sandblaster, I will probably find other things to sandblast. Then if anyone else needed anything sandblasted, I could do it for them.

I dropped the engine in my Jalpa to do the clutch. I can't imagine owning a car can get much hairier, parts are simply not available without making them or paying out the nose, or getting creative.

People often ask me "why don't you own a Lamborghini?" My answer has always been "if you think owning a Ferrari is bad, wait until you own a Lambo. You will go insane." I think I am still right.

    Hahahahahahahahaha!

Geno, there are lots of cheap options for what I think you are looking for. The problem that professionals face is environmental in nature. As long as the paint that Ferruccio used didn't contain lead, you can blast away with a clean conscience.

    Geno,

I've looked into them but the issue wasn't the blast cabinet but getting a big enough compressor to run it properly.

Might I recommend using POR-15 after you have removed the rust. I'd you don't want to sandblast (upon my research I read that sandblasting can creat enough heat to warp a frame slightly - but maybe not?) you can use one of those metal brush attachments that connect to a power drill. It will strip off everything down to the metal in addition to scuffing the metal to prep it for paint. You could have that piece cleaned in 15-20 minutes using that wire brush.

After using that brush POR-15 makes a product called Marine Clean that cleans your metal. Then they make a paint prep product that chemically etches the metal and leaves behind some kind of Zinc coating. After that you paint the POR-15 on and it self levels and hardens like a diamond. You literally can't hammer the stuff off. After that you can leave it or paint it.

I know I sound like I own the company (due to my enthusiasm). Ha! I dont. I just saw what it did to some surface rust areas on the underside of my Hummer and now it looks better than new. I literally have coated the entire underbody, frame, a arms, etc of my Hummer. It's pretty much sealed for life.

Pm me your email and I'll send you pics.

You can see a before and after here. Like I said it is self-leveling so you can brush it on. I used a foam roller for most of it and brushes for the nooks and crannies.

One more thing. If you get it on your skin, you won't get it off with acetone, paint thinner, laquer thinner, etc. The only thing I found that worked was sandpaper. Obviously at that point it is a matter of how much skin can you stand taking off to get the POR off?

Bill, totally agree, I am a fan of POR 15. I have already stripped and coated the sway bar and mounts, a-arms, and exhaust hanger bits.

Once you are down to the bare metal I was advised that you have about 72 hrs before rust starts to set back in? What should be an immediate treatment for these parts?

You can coat it with a zinc chromate primer...
